The Outdoor Education Instructor (OEI) will support the Director of Outdoor Education (DOE) with the organisation, co‑ordination and delivery of Outdoor Education across the School. Activities include climbing, mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, hill walking, bushcraft and canoe polo – all on a regular basis.

The OEI will also support the provision of training and the organisation of expeditions for the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) scheme, as well as playing an active role in leadership programmes within the school.

Currently, events outside of the academic and co‑curricular timetable that will involve the OEI are:

  • Year 9 walk/activity/expedition
  • Practice and qualifying DofE expeditions (throughout the year)
  • Varied weekend, Leave‑out and weekend Outdoor Education Club trips
  • Summer expeditions alternating yearly between smaller and more extended oversea trips
  • Hunted
  • Rides for Refugees
  • Race The Sun
  • Assassins (Wednesday afternoon programme)

You will play a full role in supporting the provision of Outdoor Education at the College. There will be a high level of involvement during term time involving regular weekend work, and commitment to trips and expeditions outside of term time will also be required, with flexibility in the contract to allow for this.

In addition, the OEI can expect to contribute, in full, to the life of a busy boarding school. The OEI will be required to participate in the normal supervisory and co‑curricular duties undertaken by all members of staff.

The successful candidate should either be qualified or feel happy to begin the path to qualification in the following areas:

  • Hill Walking
  • Mountain Walking
  • Mountain Biking
  • Cycle Touring
  • White Water Kayaking
  • Indoor Climbing
  • Canoe Polo
  • Flat Water Paddle‑Sports
  • Minibus and Trailer Driving
  • Outdoor First Aid

The candidate should have experience in an outdoor education setting and be able to demonstrate a strong passion for life outdoors where you will spend most of your time!

General Requirements

In accordance with the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (as amended) and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (as amended) you must take reasonable care not to endanger yourself or other persons whilst  must co‑operate with the College to enable it to comply with its legal duties for Health and Safety.
