Job Overview
Facilitate multidisciplinary patient care as a named nurse / team leader. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, and assume management and leadership responsibilities of the ward/department in the absence of the senior nurse. Contribution to the supervision and teaching of staff and students.
Responsibilities- Demonstrate up‑to‑date knowledge of national and local professional issues and lead or facilitate their local implementation.
- Take responsibility for a defined caseload of patients and manage patient care from assessment through to discharge.
- Prepare and submit risk assessments, implement risk reducing measures and report deficiencies to the line manager.
- Act on behalf of patients, carers and staff to ensure their views are represented.
- Implement local and national Clinical Governance agenda.
- Support the Sister/Charge Nurse and their deputy in the implementation of their role.
- Effectively manage complaints and report to the Matron in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse.
- Promote collaborative working and effective communication within the multidisciplinary team.
- Ensure timely management of clinical incidents and near‑misses; report actions taken to minimise risk.
- Develop links with all care agencies to facilitate seamless care delivery.
- Promote health and wellness through practice and education of patients, relatives, carers and staff.
- Take responsibility for developing innovative practice and lead its implementation to enhance patient care.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Minimise hazards in the working area, report identifiable hazards and adhere to all safe work systems applicable to the area.
- Promote awareness of child protection and attend required training; refer to local child protection policy and Trust policy.
- Promote awareness of adult protection issues and attend required training in line with the Herefordshire Multi‑Agency Policy and Procedures.
- Actively participate in the effective and efficient use of the ward/departmental budget.
- Deputise in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse.
- Manage own time and that of others through delegation to ensure high quality patient care.
- Act as preceptor, mentor and clinical supervisor for junior staff and students.
- Contribute to setting yearly personal and professional objectives for junior staff reflecting development needs in conjunction with ward/department philosophy.

- First or Second Registered Nurse.
- Ability to work well under pressure.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for a wide range of people.
- Experience with in a relevant clinical area.
- Demonstrated leadership experience.
- Experience of change management.
