Position: Natural Environment Manager (Herefordshire Council)

The Role

Herefordshire Council is seeking an experienced and strategic leader to manage its award-winning Natural Environment Team, recognised with the LGC Environment Award and RTPI Excellence Award in 2024.

As the Council’s lead specialist for ecology, biodiversity net gain, landscape, trees, open space and nature recovery, you will oversee a team of environmental professionals and drive the delivery of key priorities across the county.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the implementation of the Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS).
  • Providing expert advice to planning and development services.
  • Managing biodiversity and ecological services, including the Herefordshire Biological Records Service and Tree Preservation Orders.
  • Delivering innovative projects focused on habitat restoration, species protection and nature recovery.
  • Supporting the Nutrient Management Plan for the River Wye and River Lugg.
  • Managing budgets, securing external funding and representing the Council in regional and national forums.
  • Promoting community involvement through volunteering and citizen science initiatives.

About You

You will be a collaborative and confident manager with:

  • Significant experience in ecology, biodiversity net gain, landscape, trees, open space, nature recovery or related disciplines.
  • Strong knowledge of the UK planning system.
  • Experience delivering complex environmental programmes and managing stakeholders.
  • Excellent project and people management skills.
  • A relevant degree in ecology, environmental science or a related subject.
  • A full driving licence and willingness to undertake site visits.
