Job Summary

The packaging utility operator will operate and adjust all equipment in multiple packaging areas; monitor line flow and waste; correct problems affecting quality and production costs; make line changes as directed by the Production / Package Lead or Team Leader. The operator will seamlessly change positions between qualified jobs to meet plant needs.

Responsibilities
  • Cover shift and overtime needs when absences occur.
  • When qualified for multiple jobs, be assigned to the position based on priority set by seniority.
  • Follow training, pulling a bid, and disqualification procedures per handbook if unable to meet qualification standards.
  • Participate in overtime rotation for qualified positions and be considered by seniority for absence coverage.
  • Train on set positions and may move shifts only within the group of operators covered for those positions.
  • May be required to work any shift temporarily (generally not to exceed 3 months) for coverage.
  • Maintain safe work practices and participate in safety programs, ensuring that safe practices are followed in all work groups.
  • Communicate positively with hourly associates and salaried personnel.
  • Perform routine checks such as CILs, CLs, and FSILs.
  • Read, write, and communicate in English using prints, sketches, diagrams, operating instructions, and technical manuals.
  • Maintain 5S in assigned areas.
  • Learn and demonstrate safe use and skilled application of tools used in this plant per established practices and procedures.
  • Perform housekeeping to keep all areas safe and clean; support CPS programs such as 5S and Centerlining.
  • Work any shift, overtime, and all days of the week as needed.
Basic Qualifications

High school diploma or GED preferred.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, including whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees.
  • Apply common sense to carry out written, oral, or diagram instructions; manage problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Know equipment limits and how to avoid deviations; troubleshoot effectively.
Physical Environment and Demands
  • Lift up to 50 lbs and stand, walk, bend, stoop, twist, and turn frequently.
  • Work in a noisy environment with temperatures ranging from hot to cold.
  • Perform repetitive arm, wrist, and hand movements; work with hands and arms overhead, and under equipment.
  • Operate equipment requiring manual dexterity, coordination, and good balance at ground level and in high places.
  • Required vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

    Must perform essential functions of the position; reasonable accommodations provided for disabilities.
  • Noise level above 85 dB; hearing protection required.
