Senior Accountant

A nonpartisan think tank committed to advancing U.S. foreign policy through deep geopolitical analysis is hiring a Senior Accountant to join their finance team in Herndon, VA. This newly created position offers the opportunity to take ownership of the organization's day-to-day accounting operations while growing into an Accounting Manager role within a year. This role is ideal for an experienced, process-driven accountant who thrives in a collaborative, international environment and is eager to grow into leadership.

Senior Accountant Responsibilities:

• Lead month-end and year-end close processes to ensure timely, accurate financial results
• Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and internal financial statements
• Oversee payroll and benefits processing, including reconciliations
• Develop and manage budgets, track performance, and conduct variance analysis
• Coordinate with external auditors and prepare supporting audit and tax schedules
• Maintain and improve internal financial reporting systems and controls
• Assist with upgrades to financial systems and process improvements
• Support global operations with international financial insights
• Collaborate with leadership across departments to streamline accounting functions

Senior Accountant Requirements:

• Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience
• Proven experience supporting audit and tax processes
• Associate's degree required;
  Bachelor's preferred
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
• Strong communication and cross-department collaboration skills
• Highly organized, self-motivated, and process-oriented
• Experience with Sage Intacct and ADP is a plus
• Nonprofit accounting experience is preferred
