We have an exciting opportunity for an FPGA Engineer within the CSS team which is part of our Electromagnetic Systems group. The position will be located in Herndon, VA.
The CSS Innovations team provides cutting‑edge security solutions for the United States Government and works on spacecraft payload and system development, ground control software, embedded software, and cyber capabilities. Key customers include the Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community.
- Participate in derived‑requirements definition, avionics hardware development and implementation, and system integration, test, and verification for spacecraft and associated flight‑payload/ground electronics.
- Focus on digital and FPGA hardware/firmware development and implementation, including schematic design, board functional test, and associated firmware and test software.
- Formulate long‑term plans for solution development, documentation, and deployment, and meet compliance, reporting, and safety standards.
- Evaluate integration of the engineering solution within the overall environment and ensure proper documentation, testing, maintenance, and updates.
- Communicate with engineering professionals, solution users, and management throughout the development cycle, act as a prime technical contact on contracts or projects, and coordinate with senior external personnel on technical matters.
- Determine technical objectives for advanced engineering problems.
- Serve as a prime technical contact within the engineering team for assigned projects or programs.
- Provide advisory or leadership on a project, guiding less experienced staff.
- Plan and guide the deployment of engineering solutions, including resource requirements, testing, documentation, integration, compliance, and safety.
- Plan maintenance of solutions, including documentation, reporting, publishing, and technical presentations to ensure viability.
- Plan for future applications based on new engineering developments.
- Participate in or lead development of new or expanded business opportunities.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Observe all laws, regulations, and applicable obligations in all business contexts.
- Work safely in accordance with operating procedures and practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
- Work on a 9x80 schedule with every other Friday off.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical discipline required;
Master’s or PhD preferred. Four or more years of experience with a bachelor’s degree or two or more years with a master’s. Equivalent experience may substitute for education. - Extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, with project leadership experience.
- Ability to understand and apply new concepts quickly; strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience with FPGA development required;
Actel tool chains a plus. - Comfortable working with custom/standard serial protocols.
- Experience with soft‑core processors and FPGAs working with custom protocols highly desired.
- Experience interfacing with focal plane arrays a plus.
- Spacecraft hardware development experience a plus.
- Comfortable designing, developing, and debugging small circuitry for sensing, digital data manipulation, and electro‑mechanical control.
- Proficiency with schematics and laboratory testing of electronics hardware and embedded systems required.
- Proficiency in C programming desirable.
- Experience with software development and Linux environment desirable.
- Customer‑focused, able to work independently or in a team.
- Ability to obtain and maintain DoD TS clearance required.
- Willing to work extended hours and travel as required.
Job Type: Full‑Time | Salary range: $81,080 - $141,650
