Position summary: The Junior Engineer/Commissioning Specialist works on assigned projects assisting senior mechanical engineers/plumbing designers with sustainable mechanical/plumbing systems design and integration or assisting senior commissioning professionals/project managers with the commissioning of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, special systems, and life safety (Fire Alarm/Fire Suppression) systems both in the office and at construction project sites.

The ideal candidate will have a BS in Mechanical Engineering and two to three years of professional experience in mechanical/HVAC/Plumbing systems design and building systems commissioning in the facilities construction or engineering consulting (A/E) industry, and who is looking to pursue a career track as a future registered Professional Engineer (PE).

Essential functions and responsibilities

Assist senior mechanical engineers with the sustainable design and integration of mechanical and plumbing systems:

  • Become familiarized with construction, mechanical, plumbing, electrical and energy efficiency codes, and sustainability certifications requirements (i.e.: USGBC LEED, Green Globes, Guiding Principles, etc.) applicable to the assigned projects
  • Perform ASHRAE 62.1 Ventilation Analysis
  • Perform heating and cooling load calculations and/or energy analysis, utilizing industry standard software such as TRANE TRACE 700, Carrier HAP, or IESVE
  • Perform duct and piping layout and sizing per standard engineering practices, utilizing Autodesk AutoCAD and/or Revit programs
  • Perform and coordinate HVAC and plumbing equipment selections with assistance from manufacturer representatives
  • Produce AutoCAD and/or Revit mechanical and plumbing construction drawings, including HVAC and plumbing floor plans, section cuts, air and water flow diagrams, pressurization airflow balances, equipment schedules, installation/piping details, control diagrams, points lists and sequence of operations, plumbing riser diagrams, etc.
  • Edit mechanical and plumbing specification sections (CSI Master Format and Specs Intact)
  • Coordinate mechanical and plumbing drawings with other disciplines (i.e.: architectural, civil, structural, electrical, etc.) for conflict resolution and project integration into design submissions
  • Plot submission drawings for assembly and packaging for delivery
  • Incorporate design submission review and/or backcheck comments to the current design documents per direction of the senior engineer in responsible charge
  • Provide sustainable design documentation and upload to entity website for compliance with certification requirements (i.e.: USGBC-LEED online, GBI-Green Globes, GBI’s DOD Guiding Principles; WELL, Healthy Building, etc.)
  • Respond to construction RFIs and review construction equipment submittals and shop drawings for general conformance to construction documents. Provide input to senior PE in responsible charge
  • Visit construction sites to review progress of construction and verify systems installation conformance to construction documents

Assist senior Commissioning Project Managers/Certified Professionals with the execution of commissioning projects:

  • Review the Owner Project Requirements (OPR), the engineer’s Basis of Design Narrative (BOD) and construction Contract Documents (CDs)
  • When applicable (i.e.: LEED Enhanced Commissioning Services), review design submission packages at various stages (i.e.: DD, 65%, 100%, IFB/C) from a commissioning perspective for constructability, maintainability, accessibility, testability, and conformance to OPR and BOD
  • Edit divisions 1, 23 and 26 commissioning specification sections when applicable
  • Assist with drafting of the Commissioning Plan
  • Review construction equipment submittals and shop drawings for general conformance to construction/contract documents and OPR
  • Review A/E responses to construction RFIs and architectural supplemental instructions (ASIs) for any contract changes that may impact the commissioning scope and update the Commissioning Plan accordingly
