Network Engineer (Level 2-3)
Herndon / Reston, VA – 4-Month Contract-to-Hire
Qualified candidates must be U.S. citizens, able to obtain a U.S. Government‑issued security clearance, and reside within commuting distance of the Herndon, VA job site.
Role OverviewThe Network Engineer will be responsible for installing, administering, and maintaining enterprise network infrastructure to ensure high availability, performance, and security of business‑critical applications. This role plays a key part in ongoing network operations, improvements, and long‑term infrastructure planning.
Strategy & Planning- Participate in network process improvements and operational best practices
- Support capacity planning and long‑term network strategy development
- Collaborate with network engineering, application, and database teams to ensure scalability, reliability, and availability
- Assist in the design and support of secure VPN infrastructure for vendor and partner connectivity
- Research and evaluate network hardware, software, and protocols
- Work with vendors, contractors, and service providers to procure network solutions
- Support deployment of workstations, servers, network devices, firewalls, encryption systems, and host security tools
- Administer routers, switches, wireless access points, UPS devices, and related network hardware
- Maintain routing protocols and queues to meet business requirements
- Perform network, server, and security audits; review logs for trends and anomalies
- Recommend and implement network upgrades, improvements, and repairs
- Ensure reliable network connectivity for all end‑user workstations
- Support organizational initiatives by participating in project‑based network efforts
- Respond to and prioritize network‑related tickets from the help desk queue
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field preferred (or equivalent experience)
- 7–10 years of experience supporting enterprise LAN/WAN and routing/switching environments
- Hands‑on experience with Cisco security products (ASA, Firepower, etc.)
- Experience working with SD‑WAN technologies
- CCNA (Collaboration/Voice and/or Security) required
- CCNP preferred
- Highly motivated, proactive self‑starter with a strong desire to learn and grow
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross‑functional teams
