Overview
The Break/Fix Data Center Technician provides hands-on support for data center hardware by performing basic troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of equipment. This role supports day-to-day data center operations by responding to hardware incidents, completing assigned tasks, and following established procedures under the guidance of senior technicians or engineers.
Scope of Work- Perform break/fix activities on data center hardware, including servers, network devices, and storage systems
- Replace failed components such as hard drives, memory, power supplies, fans, and cables
- Rack, stack, and de-rack servers and related equipment
- Execute basic troubleshooting to identify hardware issues and escalate complex problems as needed
- Follow documented standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions
- Open, update, and close tickets in a ticketing system with accurate notes and status updates
- Perform visual inspections and basic diagnostics on equipment
- Label, inventory, and track hardware assets
- Assist with cable management (fiber and copper) according to data center standards
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas and racks
- Adhere to data center safety, security, and compliance policies at all times
- Work in a 24x7 environment, which may include nights, weekends, and on-call rotations
- Respond to break/fix requests within defined service level agreements (SLAs)
- Install replacement parts and verify functionality after repair
- Assist senior technicians with larger hardware deployments or maintenance activities
- Document work performed and communicate status to team members and supervisors
- Handle equipment carefully to avoid damage and data center incidents
- Basic understanding of computer hardware components (servers, storage, networking equipment)
- Ability to follow technical instructions and procedures accurately
- Comfortable working with hand tools (screwdrivers, torque tools, ESD equipment)
- Ability to lift and move equipment up to 40–50 lbs with or without assistance
- Willingness to work in a data center environment with noise, cold aisles, and raised floors
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
- Basic computer skills (ticketing systems, email, documentation tools)
- Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field preferred (or equivalent hands-on experience)
- 0–2 years of experience in IT support, data center operations, or hardware support preferred
- Entry-level certifications are a plus but not required (e.g., CompTIA A+, Network+, or equivalent)
- Exposure to data center environments or IT support roles
- Familiarity with ticketing systems (Service Now, Remedy, Jira, etc.)
- Basic understanding of networking concepts (ports, cables, switches)
- Willingness to pursue technical certifications
