Akima is seeking a seasoned Director of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) to lead and drive our enterprise‑wide safety vision. This strategic role will shape a best‑in‑class safety culture across a diverse portfolio of businesses supporting high‑visibility government and commercial programs.

The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in safety and quality practices across government, construction, and general industry, along with a passion for creating environments where people work safely, incident and injury free.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement the organization’s environmental health and safety programs.
  • Monitor the work environment to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and laws.
  • Conduct risk assessments and enforce preventative measures.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents to discover root causes and assist in handling workers’ compensation claims.
  • Educate and train employees on environmental health and safety protocols.
  • Set organizational safety and environmental policies and standards that comply with OSHA, EPA, State, and local law.
  • Keep abreast of industrial changes to anticipate possible impacts on environmental health and safety protocols.
  • Ensure all safety inspections are properly carried out, fire drills are held regularly, and first aid kits are adequately stocked.
  • Implement and manage ISO 14001 environmental and ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management systems.
  • Create and manage disaster preparedness plans.
  • Communicate with regulatory bodies to report accidents, incidents, or disputes while coordinating with internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with operations leadership, legal, and other stakeholders to integrate safety systems into every mission‑critical process.
  • Build strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders including company executives, clients, regulatory agencies, and field HSE teams.
  • Oversee development and execution of HSE programs, metrics tracking, and compliance initiatives across all business units.
  • Continuously improve performance reporting, safety communications, and proactive risk mitigation processes.
Qualifications
  • 20+ years of progressive experience in Health, Safety, and Environmental leadership roles.
  • Proven ability to lead enterprise‑wide HSE programs across diverse operating environments.
  • Experience building and motivating an HSE team that drives injury and incident reduction, cost savings, and culture transformation.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOE, and other relevant regulatory standards and reporting requirements.
  • Experience in mission‑critical environments such as defense, energy, or infrastructure is highly valued.
  • Ability to travel as required.
  • US Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field required; advanced degree or certifications (CSP, CIH, etc.) preferred.

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) – Board of Certified Safety Professionals.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) – American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) – IHMM Institute of Hazardous Materials Management.
  • Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) – Institute for Safety and Health Management.
