Backend Developer – Healthcare Accounting Services

Location: Herndon, VA (Onsite)

Clearance Requirements: Must be eligible for Arkansas Security Clearance

Position

Description:

We are seeking a skilled Backend Developer to join a mission‑driven team supporting Healthcare Accounting Services for the State of Arkansas. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain backend systems that power healthcare eligibility, claims, and financial reconciliation workflows.

The ideal candidate brings strong backend or full‑stack development experience, deep understanding of financial systems integration
, and working knowledge of healthcare data and compliance standards such as HIPAA, CMS, and HITECH
. You will develop scalable APIs and microservices, implement secure data processing workflows, and collaborate closely with product managers, architects, and data teams to deliver efficient, compliant, and high‑performing systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop backend accounting modules for healthcare eligibility, claims, and payments.
  • Implement features for financial reconciliation
    , payment tracking, and cost allocation.
  • Build and maintain RESTful APIs and microservices integrating with healthcare and financial systems.
  • Develop data pipelines and ETL processes for importing, transforming, and reconciling financial data.
  • Collaborate with data engineers to design and optimize data models for accounting and claims workflows.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA
    , CMS
    , and HITECH standards, maintaining PHI/PII protection.
  • Implement secure coding practices and build audit trails for financial transactions.
  • Support CI/CD pipelines
    , containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and Dev Ops automation.
  • Work with Kafka or RabbitMQ for asynchronous event‑driven processing.
  • Conduct unit, integration, and automated testing to ensure reliability and performance.
  • Integrate backend services with EHR platforms
    , insurance eligibility systems
    , and ERP/general ledger systems
    .
  • Partner cross‑functionally with QA, Dev Ops, and product teams to ensure seamless system interoperability.
Required Skills/

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of hands‑on experience in backend or full‑stack software development.
  • Proficiency in one or more languages:
    Java, C#, Python, or Node.js
    .
  • Strong database design and transaction experience (
    SQL Server, Postgre

    SQL, or Oracle

    ).
  • Proven expertise developing RESTful APIs and microservices architectures
    .
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines
    , Docker
    , Kubernetes
    , and Dev Ops tools.
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA compliance
    , PHI/PII data handling
    , and secure integration patterns.
  • Understanding of healthcare data formats such as EDI 270/271, X12, HL7, and FHIR
    .
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience integrating accounting and financial systems within healthcare environments.
  • Exposure to EHR
    , ERP
    , or general ledger system integrations.
  • Knowledge of ETL development
    , data reconciliation, and healthcare data pipelines.
  • Experience with test‑driven development (TDD) and automated testing frameworks.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, mission‑driven team environment.
