Position: Utility Equipment Operator II (Sewer)

Salary/Pay Rate: $52,000 - $75,000/annually dependent on qualifications + $2,000 take home hiring bonus

Job Purpose

The purpose of this position is to perform repair and maintenance to the town’s sewer system. Employees in this classification are responsible for operating, but not limited to dump trucks, tractors, front‑end loaders, backhoes, bobcats, rollers, lawn mowers and snow removal equipment. May prepare and maintain records; performs general maintenance on equipment. Requires 24/7 response to sewer emergencies.

Responsibilities
  • Operates a variety of equipment in sewer line repair and maintenance.
  • Serves as lead worker on job sites; coordinates instructions and activities to crew; may perform crew supervisor duties in supervisor’s absence.
  • Services and makes minor repairs to sewer equipment; transports equipment as needed.
  • Investigates customer complaints.
  • Performs routine and emergency maintenance to ensure unrestricted conveyance of wastewater.
  • Conducts and records inflow and infiltration (I&I) inspections of town’s sewer system.
  • Assists with inspection of mechanical or lining of sewer repairs; installs and televises sewer lines.
  • Maintains access to trunk lines and meter stations; calibrates meters. Pulls water meters for testing.
  • Checks and services flapper valves; checks air quality in confined spaces per permit requirements; performs smoke testing; assists other crews with confined space testing.
  • Assists with “Miss Utility” tickets.
  • Repairs manholes; monitors manholes for backups.
  • Responds to sewer emergencies related to breaks, backups and repairs.
  • Installs water meters, ground meters, fire hydrants, drinking fountains and new water lines.
  • Repairs main water line breaks; repairs and maintains fire hydrants and well buildings; backfills around ground meters.
  • Assists in inspection of system below and above ground that requires confined space entry per permit requirements, or climbing tanks using appropriate fall protection apparatus.
  • Performs fire flow tests.
  • Reads monthly meter book, changes flow chart, maintains records as required.
  • Checks air quality in confined spaces per permit requirements. Sets up work zones safely, according to standards. Flags traffic during roads and rights‑of‑way maintenance.
  • Assists in setup and breakdown for town special events; may work at special events as needed.
  • Assists in snow and ice removal.
  • Assists other crews as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Position is considered “essential personnel”; defined as staff who are required to report to their designated work location during weather‑related or other emergencies, even when town offices are closed, or normal operations are suspended.

    Requirements
    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • One to two years’ experience and/or training in sewer (sanitary or storm) or water system maintenance preferred.
    • Valid Commercial driver’s license, Class B with air brakes and tanker endorsement within six months of employment.
    • Must be able to complete competent person training for trench safety and confined space entry within six months of employment.
    • Must be able to obtain both flagger certification and forklift operator license issued by the Virginia Department of Transportation within six months of employment with the town.

    Physical Requirements

    Duties involve the ability to exert physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).

    Duties may also require coordinated movements to operate light and heavy equipment; some duties require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, tastes, odors, depths and textures; some duties require suitable, visual perception and discrimination, as well as oral communications ability. Tasks may risk exposure to adverse, environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease and pathogenic substances.

    Hours: 6:30am - 3:00pm

    Due to the nature of a government providing services to the public, all duties of this position are required to be fulfilled at the designated worksite in the town. No remote work is available.
