To provide a high standard of cleaning throughout the school, ensuring that classrooms, corridors, offices, toilets, and sharing spaces are clean, safe and prepared for use by students, staff and visitors.
Key Responsibilities- To maintain a clean and hygienic environment in designated areas of the school.
- Daily
Duties Include: - Vacuuming classrooms, corridors and carpets.
- Sweeping and mopping hard floors.
- Wiping and sanitising desks, work surfaces, and touch points.
- Cleaning sinks, toilets, urinals, and washrooms.
- Emptying waste and recycling bins and disposing of rubbish safely.
- Cleaning door glass and internal windows where needed.
- Restocking consumables (soap, toilet roll, paper towels.
- Securing and / or accessing areas as instructed by the site manager.
- Following all key – handling and school security procedures.
- Reporting any security concerns immediately.
- Using all cleaning equipment safely and correctly.
- Maintaining cleanliness and organisation of cleaning cupboards.
- Reporting equipment faults or low supplies of materials.
- Using chemicals responsibly and in line with COSHH requirements.
- Adhering to all school Health & Safety and COSHH guidelines.
- Using warning signs where floors are wet or slippery.
- Reporting hazards, spillages or damage as required.
- Ensuring equipment and chemicals are stored safely after use.
- Maintaining a professional and polite approach when interacting with staff and students.
- Working flexibly to support deep cleans, school events, or staff absence cover.
- Contributing to a clean, safe, and welcoming learning environment.
Due to the size and needs of Herne Bay High School, cleaners may be reassigned to different areas of the school at any time. This includes classrooms, offices, corridors, and specialist rooms, sports areas, and toilets.
- Move between different departments and buildings required.
- Cover other areas to support colleagues during busy periods and absences, illness, or increased demand.
- Adapt to changes in cleaning routes or daily cleaning plans at short notice.
- Work as part of a flexible team to ensure the whole school remains clean, safe, and operational.
This flexibility is an essential part of the role to ensure high standards are maintained throughout the entire school.
- Ability to perform cleaning tasks to a high standard.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Reliable, punctual, and self‑motivated.
- Able to work independently as part of a team.
- Basic understanding of health and safety procedures.
- Physically able to carry out the role (lifting, bending, using equipment).
- Willingness to undertake training and follow school procedures.
- Experience cleaning in a school or similar environment.
- Experience using industrial cleaning equipment.
- Cleaning‑related training or qualifications.
- Manual handling of equipment and waste.
- Use of chemicals (COSHH).
- Possible contact with bodily fluids (e.g. toilet / accident clean‑ups).
- Professionalism, respect, and confidentiality.
- Commitment to safeguarding and child protection.
- Willingness to support the school’s ethos and community.
- Providing a consistent, high quality cleaning service.
