Overview
The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Medical Education, in Hershey, PA, is seeking a part-time Education Program Specialist, also known as Cadaver Preparer/Lab Assistant, to be part of a dynamic team in the Human Structure Department. The role involves preparing, delivering, and managing human anatomical specimens for the required courses and programs supported by the department. The candidate is expected to be a licensed Funeral Director or working toward the licensure exam in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and able to prep and embalm cadavers for PSCOM.
The candidate will function as a liaison with the Humanities Gifts Registry of Pennsylvania, Hershey Medical Center, and other institutions within and outside the Penn State system with which we collaborate. The job involves administrative tracking paperwork, coordination, preparation, and the cleaning/maintenance of various prep or lab spaces designated as part of the anatomical programs within the Department of Human Structure and College of Medicine.
We are looking for a self-motivated individual who can manage their time effectively and possesses strong organizational skills.
- Education:
Funeral sciences associate or bachelor’s degree. - Certification:
Licensed Funeral Director or minimally finishing apprenticeship and preparing for the licensure exam in Pennsylvania. Willing to receive certification to run the crematory at PSCOM. - Experience:
Prefer at least two years of embalming experience. Ability to navigate regulations regarding cadavers and their transportation and handling. Comfort with digital communication, Office software, and written and verbal communication skills. Preference is given to candidates with experience in interprofessional teams or an educational environment, though this is not required.
- Prepare cadavers for anatomical sciences programs, including cannulation, moving, cleaning, and embalming using formalin or glutaraldehyde-based protocols; learn new protocols as needed. Basic math for dilutions may be required. Track cadavers and specimens and assist in preparation and return of cremains.
- Aid in setting up various lab events, organize/track specimens and lab usage, and prepare/reconfigure lab supplies and spaces for events and courses. Move tables, specimens, or fluids; perform cleaning, reorganization, and inventorying of spaces and supplies.
- Work under the supervision of the Anatomy Lab Supervisor and the Director of the Anatomy Labs and programs. Communicate effectively; work independently and in teams; possess basic computing skills for records maintenance and data management.
