Summary of position

The Staff Nurse, RN is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care to a designated group of patients. The nurse will establish goals and priorities of nursing care. The nurse will develop a written plan of nursing care which includes patient education and discharge planning. The staff nurse will be responsible for documentation of care given with patient progress.

The RN will work collaboratively with the medical staff in matters of patient care.

The Neuroscience Critical Care Unit is a 31-bed unit that provides specialized neuroscience care to critically ill patients with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 2:1 or 3:1. The unit is a mix of patient acuity, including intensive and intermediate care. This unit celebrates Gold Level Beacon status through the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and promotes the latest in evidenced based practices.

Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center. This means that patients experiencing a stroke will have access to the highest level of care beyond the standard treatment of tenecteplase (TNK) administration. Additionally, we have 24/7 on-site neurosurgeons available to provide neurovascular intervention. Our team uses advanced technologies such as Brain Tissue Oxygenation Monitoring, Intracranial Pressure (ICP) monitoring, External Ventricular Drains (EVD), lumbar drains, and Targeted Temperature Management (TTM) to treat a variety of neurological issues, including:

  • Hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes
  • Brain tumors and CNS malignancy
  • Neurotrauma, including traumatic brain injuries
  • Neurological disorders such as ALS, Guillain barre, and myasthenia
Responsibilities

Responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for a designated patient group; establishing goals and priorities; developing a written care plan including patient education and discharge planning; documenting care and patient progress; and collaborating with the medical team.

Minimum qualifications
  • Registered Nurse by state of employment or holds a multistate RN license through the Interstate Nurse Licensure Compact (INLC) OR a Registered Nurse from another state with a Temporary PA Practice Permit.
  • 6 months RN experience required.
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience in a neuroscience Intensive Care Unit is preferred, but general intensive care unit / critical care experience is acceptable, or two years of medical/surgical/telemetry experience in an acute care setting.
Physical requirements
  • Able to sit occasionally; stand constantly; walk frequently.
  • Able to lift/carry 0-10 lbs frequently; 11-50 lbs occasionally.
  • Able to push/pull 0-20 lbs frequently; 21-75 lbs occasionally.
  • Able to climb occasionally; reach constantly.
  • Able to use hand for simple/firm grasping.
