Role Type: Hybrid, 2 – 3 days in the office
The RoleWe are looking for a Junior / Assistant Quantity Surveyor to support the commercial and cost management of capital investment projects within a regulated utilities or infrastructure environment. This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their Quantity Surveying career to gain hands‑on experience across NEC‑led projects, working alongside experienced commercial and project professionals.
You’ll support the commercial function across the project lifecycle, helping with cost control, contract administration, and reporting while developing your technical and contractual knowledge.
Key Responsibilities Commercial & Cost Support- Assist with cost management activities across Cap Ex‑funded infrastructure projects.
- Support the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and cost reports.
- Help track project costs, variations, and expenditure against budgets.
- Maintain accurate cost and commercial records.
- Provide support with the administration of NEC contracts (NEC3/NEC4)
- Assist with Early Warnings, Compensation Events, and payment assessments.
- Help maintain change control logs and supporting documentation.
- Support the identification and tracking of commercial and contractual risks.
- Assist with maintaining audit trails and commercial documentation
- Support compliance with internal governance and regulatory requirements
- Work closely with Project Managers, Engineers, and Senior Quantity Surveyors.
- Support communication with contractors and consultants on commercial matters
- Assist with issue resolution and dispute avoidance under guidance
- Learn best‑practice commercial and contract management within a regulated environment
- Support continuous improvement of commercial processes and reporting
- Develop NEC contract knowledge and core Quantity Surveying skills on live projects.
- A degree (or working towards a degree) in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline.
- Some experience through placement, internship, graduate role, or site‑based exposure.
- Basic understanding of cost control and construction processes.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Positive attitude with a willingness to learn and develop.
- Exposure to NEC contracts (NEC3 or NEC4).
- Experience in infrastructure, utilities or construction environments.
- Working towards RICS, CIOB, or equivalent professional qualification.
- Degree (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or a related discipline.
- Strong commercial judgement with a pragmatic, delivery‑focused mindset.
- Highly organised, detail‑oriented, and comfortable operating in regulated environments.
- Salary of £30,000 – £35,000, depending on experience
