Salary: £34,398 – £52,490 per annum (MPS/UPS) + SEN Allowance

Salary will be determined based on experience and position on the Main Pay Range. The maximum salary of £52,490 is applicable to candidates with substantial teaching experience equivalent to U3.

About the Role:

We are seeking a passionate and innovative Specialist Art Teacher to lead and deliver a highly adapted, inclusive Art curriculum for pupils across Key Stages 3–5.

This is a fantastic opportunity to champion creativity within a specialist setting, using art as a powerful tool for engagement, therapeutic development and communication. The successful candidate will ensure all pupils can access meaningful artistic experiences, regardless of their learning profile or communication needs.

Key Responsibilities:

Specialist Art Teaching

• Plan and deliver a differentiated Art curriculum for pupils working significantly below age-related expectations.

• Adapt materials and techniques to support physical, sensory and communication needs.

• Incorporate multi-sensory, tactile and experiential approaches.

• Develop pupils’ confidence, fine motor skills and creative expression.

• Create opportunities to celebrate and showcase pupil work.

Curriculum Development

• Lead the development of Art across the school.

• Map progression through small-step achievements linked to EHCP outcomes.

• Promote cross-curricular creative learning and enrichment opportunities.

Communication & SEND Practice

• Use structured teaching, visual supports and predictable routines.

• Embed communication strategies such as PECS, Makaton or other AAC systems.

• Work collaboratively with therapists to support sensory and communication development.

Assessment & Behaviour

• Monitor progress against personalised targets and contribute to Annual Reviews.

• Maintain a calm, structured creative environment.

• Use art to support emotional regulation and positive behaviour.

Leadership & Collaboration

• Lead and deploy Teaching Assistants effectively during lessons.

• Share best practice and promote creativity across the wider school.

• Engage fully in CPD and specialist SEND training.

Requirements:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

• Experience teaching Art at secondary level (specialist SEND experience desirable).

• Understanding of autism-friendly and structured classroom practice.

• Experience working with EHCPs and personalised learning programmes.

Strong communication skills and the ability to lead a classroom team.

• A creative, patient and resilient approach to teaching.
