SEN Teaching Assistant – ASD

Location:

Salary: £90–£100 per day

Contract:

Full-time, long-term temporary

Start Date:

Key Stages: KS3–KS5

Help autistic young people thrive in secondary education.

Teach Now is seeking a committed SEN Teaching Assistant with experience or a strong interest in supporting pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for a full-time secondary position in Hertfordshire.

You will work alongside teachers and the SEN team to support autistic pupils across KS3–KS5, helping them access learning, manage transitions, develop independence and feel secure within the school environment.

The role will involve a mixture of classroom support, 1:1 work and small-group intervention. It would suit someone who understands that effective autism support is individualised, consistent and focused on each pupil’s strengths and needs.

Key Responsibilities

Provide targeted 1:1 and classroom support for pupils with ASD

Help pupils understand instructions, routines and expectations

Support communication, social interaction and emotional regulation

Use visual, structured and differentiated approaches where appropriate

Help pupils manage transitions between lessons and activities

Support pupils with EHCP targets and individual learning plans

Encourage independence rather than creating unnecessary reliance on adult support

Work collaboratively with teachers, the SENCo, pastoral staff and external professionals

Maintain high standards of safeguarding and pupil welfare

Requirements

We are looking for candidates who have:

Experience supporting children or young people with ASD, SEND or additional needs

A patient, consistent and positive approach

Good communication and relationship-building skills

The ability to remain calm and professional when pupils become anxious or dysregulated

An understanding of autism-informed practice

A Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification, autism training or similar qualification is desirable

An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one

The right to work in the UK

Satisfactory recent references

Relevant experience may have been gained within mainstream schools, specialist settings, alternative provision, care, youth work or other child-focused environments.
