The company is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its engineering team on a 3-month contract, supporting ongoing product development projects. The role focuses on designing enclosures and mechanisms built to withstand harsh environments, including temperatures down to
-40°C, marine conditions, and MIL-STD requirements. Working primarily in Solid Works, the engineer will produce technical drawings and build guides, review designs before manufacture, test prototypes, and support production troubleshooting while collaborating with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and other stakeholders.
- Collaborate with an internal machine shop (separate site) and external suppliers to meet company objectives
- Produce supporting documentation to enable an independent production team
- Use 3D modelling software to design parts, assemblies, and mechanisms across a range of materials and fabrication methods (notably machining, 3D printing, and laser cutting/folding)
- Estimate the work required to complete proposed tasks
- Create production-quality fabrication drawings, design documentation, and assembly drawings for new and existing components
- Take part in drawing and design reviews to ensure high-quality output for stakeholders
- Produce specifications and develop designs, prototypes, and test fixtures
- Carry out mechanical testing and verification of parts/products, with report creation
- Drive design improvements through the Engineering Change Request (ECR) process
- Support other engineering disciplines within the department to help them meet their objectives
- Communicate effectively with other engineering teams so the designed product accounts for their needs
- Fluent in English (spoken and written)
- CAD experience in Solid Works (3D modelling, 2D technical drawings, BOM production)
- Knowledge of material properties, manufacturing techniques, plating methods, coatings, and fasteners
- Willingness to travel between two UK sites on short notice
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise documentation
- Self-motivated, able to learn quickly and independently, and comfortable working within a team
- A pragmatic, hands-on approach to problem solving
Ability to design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA) - Ability to justify design decisions through calculations, analysis, and written documentation
- Familiarity with IP ratings and methods of achieving IP67
Skills:
- Ability to design ergonomic, aesthetically considered solutions
- Experience designing and running tests to support product quality
- Experience in FEA and thermal simulation
