Manufacturing Engineer, Manufacturing & Industrial Operations
Pope & Meads Ltd provides complete turnkey solutions for a wide range of manufacturing requirements, with a particular focus on high-accuracy, high-complexity machining and precision assembly. The company operates one of the UK’s leading manufacturing facilities, including a climate-controlled machine shop with high precision CNC turning, CNC milling, and conventional machinery. The site also includes a 3000 sq ft general assembly area, a 500 sq ft ISO class 7 cleanroom, and a high-calibre inspection suite capable of measuring components to within a micron.
Pope & Meads Ltd works closely with customers across R&D, Purchasing/Logistics, and Production to develop new products, redesign existing ones, streamline deliveries, and resolve technical challenges before they escalated.
The CNC Mazak Turner is a full-time, on-site role based in Hertford. This position is responsible for setting, operating, and programming Mazak CNC lathes to produce high-precision components in line with engineering drawings and customer specifications. Day-to-day tasks include selecting tooling, adjusting offsets, performing first-off and in-process inspections, and maintaining tight tolerances in a climate-controlled machine shop. The role involves collaborating with engineering and quality teams to resolve machining issues, improve processes, and ensure components meet micron-level inspection standards.
The CNC Mazak Turner is also expected to follow health and safety procedures, support continuous improvement activities, and maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Strong experience in CNC turning, ideally with Mazak controls (e.g., Mazatrol), including setting, operating, and basic programming of CNC lathes.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, geometric tolerances, and technical documentation for complex, high-precision components.
- Competence in precision measurement and inspection techniques, using tools such as micrometers, vernier calipers, bore gauges, and other metrology equipment.
- Familiarity with working in high-accuracy manufacturing environments, including climate-controlled machine shops and cleanroom or controlled assembly areas.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work closely with engineering, production, and quality teams to address technical issues and improve processes.
- Good communication skills, reliability, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced production environment.
- Relevant apprenticeship or vocational qualification in machining, manufacturing engineering, or a related discipline; prior experience in precision or aerospace/medical manufacturing is an advantage.
