ResponsibilitiesPerforms duties as outlined in departmental procedure manuals.
Performs and evaluates a variety of technical procedures with precision and accuracy.
Utilizes accepted procedures and techniques for test and quality control with the aid of automated, semi- automated and/or manual methodologies.
Must be able to assist Section Leader in meeting section’s operational and accreditation requirements.
2. CHEMISTRY/SPECIAL CHEMISTRY
Must be able to operate and report patient results in accordance with written department procedures using the following instrumentation/equipment/processes:
• Chemistry Clinical Analyzers
• Reference Lab Process
3. HEMATOLOGY/URINALYSIS/COAGULATION
Must be able to operate and report patient results in accordance with written department procedures the following instrumentation/equipment/processes:
• Hematology instrumentation
• Bone Marrow processing
• Body Fluid and Semen Analysis testing
• Manual Coagulation testing
• Verify Now instrumentation
• Centrifuges and Microscopes
4. MICROBIOLOGY
Must be able to operate and report patient results in accordance with written department procedures the following instrumentation/equipment/processes:
• Specimen planting and initial processing
• Operation of Microbiology Instrumentation
• Proficient at staining, reading and reporting gram stains
• Biological Hoods
• Able to perform stool studies, serology tests and other rapid procedures
• Able to read and interpret microbiological growth on plated media
5. TRANSFUSION MEDICINE/SEROLOGY
Must be able to operate and report patient results in accordance with written department procedures the following instrumentation/equipment/processes:
• Horizon Lab Laboratory Information System – General Lab
• Mediware Blood Bank Information System
• Cell Washing Centrifuge
• Perform Type and Screens
• Perform antibody workups
6. Operations
Performs the operations of the department and adheres to policies and procedures to effectively produce quality laboratory services.
7. Information Systems and Training
• Uses processes and systems that are efficient and cost-effective while delivering quality services
• Remains current on regulatory, legal and corporate expectations and ensures compliance
• Utilizes policies and procedures to provide direction and effectively perform in the Laboratory
• Participates in and is responsible for department achieving accrediting reviews (JCAHO, CAP, CLIA, etc)
8. Quality and Safety
• Monitors overall supply usage and inventory levels to achieve cost containment goals
• Monitors department maintenance and safety
• Ensures laboratory competency in performance and reporting of proficiency testing by maintaining and reporting appropriate documentation of data as required by accrediting agencies and hospital policy.
9. Collaboration and Meetings
• Interacts with other members of laboratory and hospital teams to ensure services of the laboratory are effective in meeting their goals, objectives and budget targets.
• Actively participates in meetings, committees and projects
• Meets annual expectations for attendance at Ethics, Forums, department meetings and other required training/workshop sessions
• Takes initiative for self-development and responds professionally to feedback from supervisor to enhance performance
10. Phlebotomy
Performs phlebotomy duties as required.
- Associate degree from a recognized community college or technical institute
- Certification (or registry eligible) as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists registered or equivalent agency
- Has had at least one year exposure to clinical laboratory techniques comparable to those performed in this laboratory.
- Clinical internships of twelve months duration meet this requirement.
