Frye was one of the area’s first Primary Stroke Centers accredited by The Joint Commission since 2008. The Neuro Progressive Care Unit is Frye’s designated Stroke Unit with 18 beds. Frye has partnered with Wake Forest Baptist Hospital’s Telestroke program to ensure patients have access to neurologists 24/7. The stroke program has received the American Heart Association Get with the Guidelines Gold Stroke Award for 2016.
Our Stroke Team nurses participate in the stroke program through application of best practice and education.
- Assess the patient’s physical and mental health, including reaction to illnesses and treatment regimens.
- Record and report the results of the nursing assessment.
- Plan, initiate, deliver, and evaluate appropriate nursing actions.
- Teach, assign, delegate to or supervise others in implementing the treatment regimen.
- Collaborate with other healthcare providers to determine appropriate care; not in prescribing or diagnosing medical treatment except under supervision of a licensed physician.
- Implement the treatment and pharmaceutical regimen prescribed by a legally authorized prescriber.
- Provide teaching and counseling about the patient’s health.
- Report and record the plan for care, nursing care given, and the patient’s response to care.
- Supervise, teach, and evaluate those who perform or are preparing to perform nursing functions and administer nursing programs and services.
- Maintain safe and effective nursing care, directly or indirectly (Nursing Practice Act, Article 9A, North Carolina).
- Monitor neurological, cardiac and medical patient status and carry out treatment plans.
- Manage long-term tracheostomy and mechanically ventilated patients; proficient in airway management for step-down patients.
- Proficient in management of neurologically impaired/compromised patients.
- Knowledgeable and proficient in caring for Epilepsy Monitoring Unit patients.
- Ability to monitor cardiac rhythms and respond appropriately.
- Adhere to attendance and punctuality policies and core measure initiatives, patient safety goals, and NQF Safe Practices.
