The Infusion Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing safe, high-quality nursing care to oncology and hematology patients receiving infusion therapies in an outpatient setting. The Infusion Nurse administers chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products, hydration, injections, and supportive medications while monitoring patients for adverse reactions and ensuring compliance with established clinical protocols, regulatory standards, and Carolina Oncology Specialists policies. This position plays a critical role in delivering compassionate, patient-centered care and fostering a positive patient experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Administer intravenous chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biotherapy, hydration, blood products, and supportive medications in accordance with physician orders and established protocols.
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments prior to, during, and following treatment.
- Verify treatment plans, medication dosages, laboratory values, and patient eligibility prior to administering therapy.
- Access, monitor, and maintain venous access devices, including peripheral IVs, PICC lines, and implanted ports.
- Monitor patients for infusion-related reactions and implement appropriate interventions when necessary.
- Provide patient and family education regarding treatment plans, medication side effects, symptom management, and follow-up care.
- Document all patient assessments, interventions, treatments, and education accurately and timely within the electronic medical record.
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and other healthcare team members to coordinate patient care.
- Review laboratory results and communicate abnormal findings to providers as appropriate.
- Participate in care planning and ensure continuity of care throughout treatment.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, ONS, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Ensure proper handling, preparation, administration, and disposal of hazardous medications.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety activities.
- Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and initiate emergency procedures as needed.
- Maintain inventory and ensure proper storage of medications and clinical supplies.
- Attend required meetings, educational programs, and mandatory training sessions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing required.
Licensure and Certifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN®) certification preferred or obtained within a designated timeframe after hire.
