• Must be at least 18 years old and currently working on completing a high school diploma.
• Must be accepted to participate in the Apprenticeship NC program through the North Carolina Community Colleges System. This would specifically be through the Catawba Apprenticeship Network at Catawba Valley Community College.
• Must have a valid Class C driver’s license.
• Must not have been convicted of a felony and must undergo a thorough background investigation.
• Must be able to work part‑time duty hours that may vary as scheduled.

A person in this position will work directly for the Hickory Police Department, assigned to the Support Services Division as an unarmed uniformed security aide to assist in securing assigned areas throughout the City of Hickory. These assigned areas could vary in physical terrain and locations to include the City of Hickory parks and trail systems, the Downtown Social District, Hickory City Walk and Book Walk, Hickory River Walk, and assist staff at the Arts and Science Center.

A person in this position would be conducting security checks of these locations on foot, on a bicycle, or in a motor vehicle, to ensure the safety and security of citizens, personnel, and property. This person will make reports to the proper authority if a situation arises. They will maintain radio communications with the Hickory Police Department Communications Center and will file all necessary reports when required by the Hickory Police Department.

This position would make some electronic reports via computer and would require basic computer skills.

• Conduct security checks of assigned areas on foot, bicycle, or motor vehicle.
• Make reports to the proper authority if a situation arises.
• Maintain radio communications with the Hickory Police Department Communications Center.
• File all necessary reports when required by the Hickory Police Department.
• Prepare and file electronic reports via computer.
• Communicate with the general public in a face‑to‑face setting to give directions and answer inquiries.
• Receive instructions and information regarding daily duties from other employees face‑to‑face, by telephone, or by portable radio.

Work is primarily performed while standing and walking. The employee occasionally lifts light objects. Work is performed inside and outside where the employee may be exposed to cold or inclement weather. This position has been identified as safety‑sensitive and the employee will be part of a random drug testing pool handled by an outside, impartial, third‑party vendor.
