Caton Construction Group, one of the Caton Companies, is growing! Our family owned company is seeking an experienced Pipe Foreman for our Roadway Project in Catawba County, North Carolina (Hickory).

Summary/Objective

The Pipe/Utility Foreman is a field position that is responsible to organize and lead a crew to safely and efficiently perform construction activities related to the construction of underground piping systems. This position reports to the Project Superintendent. Candidates must be experienced in the planning and execution of underground RCP, CMP, and HDPE storm pipe systems installation in accordance with NCDOT specifications.

Additional experience in ductile iron water and sewer main planning, installation, and testing of completed product is a plus. Candidate must be able to read, understand and troubleshoot project plans and specifications related to the construction of the storm, water and sewer mains. Candidate must be well versed in survey layout and as-built checking for the product being installed. Must also be an experienced heavy equipment operator.

Essential Functions

  • Contract Plans and details - Must be able to read, understand and communicate about them
  • Survey control - Must be able to use a site level to layout, install, and verify product being installed.
  • Communicate site, labor, and material (ie. stone & pipe) needs instantly to Super to maintain production in the field
  • Plan, organize and lead a 3 or more person crew to successful completion of the work - the First time
  • Manage daily work schedule for timely completion within 8 hour day.
  • Create a team environment with crew members to maintain discipline, attendance and production.
  • Train new workers (may be entry level) as part of company wide training program.
  • Plan for and maintain a safe work environment, requesting any and all safety supplies at least 1 day prior to start of shift needed
  • Supervise the operation of equipment within the work area, supervise operator to maintain safety and cleanliness of work site
  • Immediately communicates problems and site conditions to upper management
  • Completing an electronic daily report documenting daily activities, work hours, site inspectors, subs and materials used or present during every day worked
  • Maintain a clean and organized site
  • Communicate with State Inspectors about work for the day, and provide input to them as needed for work in progress.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Normal days and hours of work are Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. with time provided for lunch, hours may vary. Traffic control restraints on the projects may require working different days and hours as needed. Work may be local or out of town in which case overnight stays are required. This position frequently requires long hours and weekend work.

Travel/ Driving

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Driver’s license is required. This position is eligible for a company supplied vehicle, or a monthly vehicle stipend.

Supervisory Responsibility

Assigns work to subordinates, establish deadlines and modifies work schedules to meet deadlines depicted in the project schedule.

Communicates with project team regularly, discussing schedule, needs, equipment, and long term work planning



Required Education And Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience as construction foreman with a minimum of 5 years in underground pipe system installations
  • diploma or certificate in a skilled trade (Carpenter, site grading, pipe installation etc.) a plus.
