- Operates a backhoe, trackhoe, rubber tire loader, tandem dump truck, tractor and bush hog, and other equipment in the construction and repair of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems; inspects equipment.
- Installs, repairs and maintains water meters.
- Transports equipment to and from the job site.
- Performs maintenance of specialized and heavy equipment.
- Installs water and sewer lines and mains for customers and businesses.
- Repairs water and sewer main breaks.
- Installs, repairs, and flushes fire hydrants.
- Locates water and sewer lines.
- Patches roadways and sidewalks at completion of task; repairs landscaping.
- Assists Crew Leader with project management and safety of crew.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- After‑hours work is required as necessary during emergencies, inclement weather and other times as necessary.
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED, minimum age of 18 and a valid CDL Class B driver's license is required; CDL Class A is preferred.
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment such as a backhoe, dump truck, and tractor.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of relevant safety procedures and guidelines.
- Skill in the use of heavy equipment such as a backhoe, and dump truck.
- Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
- Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Knowledge of blueprint reading.
- Knowledge of standard water & wastewater materials and procedures.
- Applicants must meet the city criteria for an acceptable driving record.
