Fleet Maintenance Manager
Overview
Manager Shop II at First Student oversees all location maintenance operations, provides shop staff oversight, and supplies maintenance operational visibility to the Location Manager. The role ensures efficient maintenance performance, safe working conditions for the fleet, and compliance with State, Federal, and company regulations.
Responsibilities- Schedule and administer fleet maintenance; troubleshoot equipment problems; communicate vehicle availability with dispatch and operations personnel.
- Hire, fire, approve salary changes, train, and develop shop staff; plan and direct work; discipline and handle employee complaints or grievances; conduct performance reviews.
- Work closely with the location manager and region maintenance management to provide status updates, review budget variances, and approve repair orders and account payable documents.
- Ensure compliance with State, Federal, and company requirements; create safe environments and adhere to all policies.
- Review repair orders, order fuel, parts, and subcontract repair work.
- Initiate and implement projects that improve efficiency or reduce operating costs.
- Train maintenance technicians on current operating procedures; ensure they are equipped and motivated for safe, timely, and cost-effective operations.
- Supervise bus fueling and arrange services for building and ground keeping as needed.
- Complete special projects as assigned and perform hands‑on work activities.
- Compensation: $95,000 – $100,000.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Technical training preferred.
- Possess a CDL Operator's license with required endorsements.
- 5+ years of hands‑on mechanical supervisory experience.
- Ability to lift 20 to 50 lbs as required.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Computer skills.
- Industry experience repairing and maintaining diesel engines and school bus equipment is preferred.
- Work in a maintenance shop environment.
- Ability to work in a crouched position or on back lying on a mechanic's dolly beneath a motor vehicle equipment; exposure to dust, dirt, and grease conditions.
