Position: Technician [Track Maintenance]- Talent Pool

Who We Are

Network Rail operates and maintains the railway infrastructure. Our passengers and freight users are at the heart of everything we do. We help connect people to their friends and families and get goods to their destination safely and efficiently. We're an organisation where people matter. When you're part of our team, you matter to us and you matter to millions.

About Our Route

We are Central route. We are the Heart of Britain's Railway. More than a million people rely on us every week, and we help transport nearly a million tonnes of freight every month. But we are more than just tracks and trains, we are a catalyst for jobs and opportunities, a connection to leisure and time with family and friends, and a foundation for communities and neighbourhoods.

We are a key part of the national network, with Birmingham New Street – the busiest station outside of London and the hub of the railway – connecting England, Scotland and Wales, with hundreds of services arriving and leaving every day.

About

The Role

We're building a talent pool of great people for upcoming Track Technician opportunities within our High Wycombe Depot. Let’s find out more about the role.

Keeping the railway safe, reliable and moving starts with people like you. As a Track Maintenance Technician, you’ll have a hands‑on role maintaining and improving the rail network (known as the Permanent Way or P‑Way), helping ensure millions of passenger and freight journeys take place safely every year.

This role is ideal if you enjoy practical, physical work and like seeing the results of your efforts at the end of a shift. You’ll work with rails, sleepers and ballast, along with drainage systems and supporting structures that keep trains running safely. You’ll also work closely with your Team Leader, supporting and guiding the team to make sure work is carried out safely, efficiently and to the right standards – giving you valuable leadership experience as you develop your career.

You’ll work outdoors all year round, in a role that offers variety, challenge and real purpose. While the work can be physically demanding and sometimes involves moving equipment across uneven ground, you’ll be part of a supportive team where safety, respect and teamwork come first. You’ll often be working near live railway lines, so having a strong safety mindset and looking out for each other is essential.

If you’re looking for a career rather than just a job, this is a fantastic opportunity. We’ll provide all the training, qualifications and ongoing support you need to succeed, helping you build skills, confidence and a long‑term career within the Track discipline.

To keep the railway running and minimise disruption for passengers, much of the work takes place during nights and weekends. You’ll need to be flexible, but shift rosters are shared in advance so you can plan your time around family, friends and other commitments. There’s also the opportunity to join an on‑call rota for additional experience and earning potential.

Please note that you must live within a 60 minute travel time of the location stated in this advert.

  • Experience of arranging and implementing safe systems of work.
  • Knowledge of how to organise and control the safe and efficient delivery of work.
  • Able to demonstrate, promote and embed safe working behaviours within the team.
  • Able to lead, motivate and direct a team.

  • Able and willing to drive vehicles as required by business need.
