At any given moment, hundreds of complex networked computer systems are operating in tandem to keep ships and submarines operating at their best. When a network goes down, vital information may be lost, from global satellite data to special intelligence communications. That's why it's critical that trained Information Systems Technicians are on board to make sure networks and related systems are designed and operated properly, and errors are fixed without any interruption to the mission.

• Manage communication operations and networks aboard Navy vessels, covering electronic mail systems, special intelligence, and information warfare systems.
• Maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot radio frequency communication systems and global satellite telecommunications systems.
• Transmit, receive, and store all incoming and outgoing messages.
• Coordinate and enforce information systems security across platforms and fleets.
• Design, install, and operate wide-area networks, computer systems, and related devices.
• Administer network systems, perform maintenance, train personnel, and manage network security.
• Install applications, troubleshoot user problems, and provide training on computer hardware and software.
• Write programs to collect and distribute data for various applications.
• Ensure proper security and handling of communications materials, systems, and equipment.
• Perform diagnostics, data recovery operations, and maintain logs.
• Operate and maintain electronic equipment used for detection and tracking, communication security, cryptography, electronic warfare, testing, and auxiliary equipment (specific to submarine technicians).

Upon completion of initial training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes (Boot Camp), both ITS and ITs report for specialized training, including Class “A” Technical School (24 weeks) in Pensacola, FL (for ITs) or Groton, CT (for ITSs). After “A” School, Information Systems Technician Submarines (ITS) will also attend Basic Enlisted Submarine School (8 weeks) in Groton, CT.

After completing training, ITs receive assignments aboard ships, communication stations, or shore stations, while ITSs may be assigned to a submarine, communication station, or shore station. Promotion opportunities are available but competitive and based on performance.

Advanced training and leadership opportunities, including officer roles for those with a college degree, may be available later in your career.

Specialized training and work experience can lead to civilian credentials in IT, network support, programming, web development, and information security, and may translate to college credit.

Under the Navy College Program, Tuition Assistance, and the Post‑9/11 GI Bill, you can pursue undergraduate degrees while serving.

• High‑school diploma or equivalent is required.
• U.S. citizen eligible for a “Top Secret” security clearance; background investigation required.
• Good arithmetic, writing, speaking, and computer skills; strong attention to detail and teamwork.
• Good manual dexterity and physical strength.
• ITS applicants must be willing to serve aboard submarines.

Serving part‑time as a Navy Reserve Sailor, duties are carried out during scheduled drilling and training periods. Annual training may take place anywhere in the world.
