Job SummaryThe successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects (planning, test execution, analysis and reporting) of hypersonic wind tunnel tests performed in Tunnel 9, which provides aerodynamic simulation and aerothermal environments critical to hypersonic system development and hypersonic vehicle technologies at speeds from Mach 7 to Mach 18. The candidate will serve as the lead contact for assigned projects, act as liaison between test facility, customer, and sponsor to ensure project objectives are achieved.
Job Duties- Planning, conducting, and reporting wind tunnel tests performed in the US Air Force’s Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel No. 9 in Silver Spring, Maryland.
- Coordination and integration of test instrumentation, model design, data collection, data reduction, facility operation. This includes troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, & sensor issues during installation.
- Development, improvement, and implementation of new test measurement techniques to increase the capabilities of the wind tunnel.
- Analysis of test results including assessment of flow-field features, boundary‑layer state, aero‑heating environment, vehicle stability.
- Act as liaison between the test facility and the test customer to ensure customer requirements are met.
- Application of sound engineering judgment to reduce risk and maximize utility of test products.
- Collaboration with test analysts, system engineers, electrical engineers, and operations to ensure successful wind tunnel test campaigns.
- Test project planning and financial management, including oversight of schedules, estimation of test resource requirements, and tracking expenditures.
- Documentation as required through written and/or oral presentation.
- It is a condition of employment to wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
- Perform other duties as required.
- B.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 0 to 7 years of progressive and relevant experience or any equivalent combination of education and progressive and relevant experience.
- Must be detail‑oriented and a strong self‑starter.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance and the AEDC local area network.
- Current U. S. Citizenship required.
- Candidates with an M.S. degree or work experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Working knowledge of Hypersonics.
- Experience acquiring, reducing, and analyzing experimental data, including hands‑on experience with data acquisition equipment, optical equipment such as cameras and lenses, and application of basic experimental techniques.
- Experience troubleshooting testing equipment (isolating errors in sensors, wiring, software, etc.) and identifying issues with mechanical assembly (interferences or fastener issues).
- Experience with wind tunnel testing.
- Knowledge of compressible and/or hypersonic flow theory.
