The Bilingual Recovery Mentor provides culturally specific services to monolingual adult Latino/Latina/Latinx clients, considering how culture intersects with addiction and recovery, and supports clients in addressing cultural influences on behavior. Services include case management, referral linkage, barrier removal, individual counseling, family support, group counseling, and assistance in engaging clients in treatment and supporting families.

Location: Life Works NW's Hillsboro Walnut site.

Pay/Benefits: $21.74 starting hourly pay, plus $2.00 per hour for Spanish language fluency. Full benefits are offered.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Screens and selects clients to participate in the mentoring program.
  • Develops the service plan for all clients, including a service reporting plan for each referral.
  • Within the first five working days following intake, the client and (if appropriate) family members meet with the Recovery Mentor and the Primary Counselor to develop a case management plan.
  • Maintains daily contact with clients for up to the first five weeks after release, helping with engagement in recovery support, housing, employment, family adjustment, legal, medical, and benefit issues; frequency decreases to twice monthly or monthly contact by the ninth hundredth day after release.
  • Assists the family in the initial implementation of the plan, maintaining regular communications with the client's primary therapist, collateral providers, community corrections staff, and linking the client system to needed services within the community.
  • Determines when to terminate clients from the program because services are no longer necessary or the client is not responding to the mentor model.
  • Meets regularly with staff from social service agencies to update them on Life Works NW services, identify unmet needs, review and update referral and case coordination procedures, obtain referral requests, and work with referral sources to remove barriers to treatment; reports back if clients fail to attend; obtains relevant case information for the clinician conducting the client's intake assessment; works with referral source and client to facilitate the family's involvement in the assessment and treatment planning process.
  • Attends informational and clinical meetings, including all-agency meetings, team meetings, consultation meetings with psychiatrists, staffing, intra-agency trainings, etc., as required.
  • Ensures all services are provided in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Requires availability for some evenings and weekends.
  • Travels between sites or in the community to drive clients when needed.
Requirements
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) fluency required.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Current Recovery Mentor Certification and a Traditional Health Worker number from the Office of Equity and Inclusion.
  • If recovering from a substance abuse related disorder, must demonstrate continuous sobriety under nonresidential, independent living conditions for the immediate past two years.
  • Substantial experience with addiction issues, including language, values, norms, and nuances of honest dialogue.
  • Extensive knowledge of navigating the social service network from the bottom up.
  • Ability to accompany clients throughout their environment.
  • Knowledge of the legal/corrections system.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries.
  • Effective communication skills and cooperative working relationship in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Requires ability to work some evenings and/or weekends.
  • Requires access to a car, valid driver's license, proof of current automobile insurance coverage, and verification of a safe driving record from DMV.
