General Description

Leads and behaves according to Potbelly Values. Leads and develops people to execute outstanding product quality and customer service, build sales and control costs for each shift. Assistant Managers must exercise a great deal of judgment and discretion regarding supervising employees and resolving customer issues. Any decisions must be consistent with Potbelly operating policies and procedures.

Focus Areas People
  • Train, coach and develop Potbelly Associates and Shift Leaders.
  • Formally evaluate Associate and Shift Leader performance, including complete and sign off on appraisals.
  • Conduct weekly feedback sessions with Associates, Certified Trainers and Shift Leaders.
  • Know, enforce, and educate Associates, Certified Trainers and Shift Leaders on all appropriate work rules, personnel policies, labor laws, and safety procedures.
  • Recommend and/or implement appropriate corrective action.
  • Recommend hiring and retention of Associates, Certified Trainers and Shift Leaders.
  • Execute a plan to decrease turnover and improve job satisfaction.
  • Schedule Associates, Certified Trainers and Shift Leaders.
  • Update communication board with critical shop information.
  • Hold monthly meetings with staff.
  • Develop musician schedule.
Customers
  • Ensure customer satisfaction and handle customer complaints effectively.
  • Maintain standards for product quality, service speed, cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Ensure a clean and sanitary environment by assigning daily cleaning duties and weekly follow-up.
  • Execute and manage all food safety requirements and practices.
  • Enforce and maintain uniform policy.
  • Manage back-of-house to meet standards.
  • Ensure shop security and safety by following procedures.
Sales
  • Drive neighborhood marketing and promotions to maximize sales potential, including recruiting and marketing outside of shop as needed.
Profit
  • Control assigned P&L line items.
  • Manage food components, labor, waste, and cash across shifts.
  • Count drawers and ensure proper cash handling procedures.
  • Provide weekly updates to the daily prep sheet.
  • Maintain food pars and inventory; place shop orders as needed.
Essential Physical Functions
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 45 hours per week.
  • Stand/walk 9-10 hours per day, sit 1-2 hours per day.
  • Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Work in warm and cool environments; noise levels may be high.
  • Must tolerate potential allergens (peanuts, egg, dairy, gluten, soy, seafood, shellfish).
  • Ability to manage a fast-paced, high-volume restaurant through organization, scheduling, problem-solving, cleanliness, training, and customer service.
Experience, Education And Behaviors
  • Minimum of 2 years of management experience in either a restaurant or retail environment.
  • High School diploma required;
    Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Pass a Food Safety Certification course (Illinois: IDPH; other states: Serv Safe or equivalent). If certification is not obtained after two attempts, the candidate is not qualified for the role.
  • English communication skills (verbal and written) required.
  • Demonstrates strong customer service, interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to multi-task and manage schedules and labor goals.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
