Job Summary

The Sr Shop Paint Technician supports the Field Maintenance Team, responsible for formulating, mixing, and applying automotive refinish materials to vehicle surfaces and sub‑assemblies. The role includes advanced refinishing procedures (multiple stage systems, two‑tone, stripes), troubleshooting, color matching, and supporting junior technicians. High performance, adherence to company policies, and achieving production metrics are essential.

Responsibilities
  • Perform adjustments and intermediate repairs on trucks and trailers.
  • Identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and make recommendations.
  • Inspect, test, and diagnose malfunctions using test instruments such as computers and pressure gauges.
  • Assist Shop Paint Technicians I & II with refinish troubleshooting.
  • Conduct advanced refinish troubleshooting and triage for complex issues.
  • Formulate and apply mixed and dispensed automotive refinish materials in accordance with standards and procedures.
  • Mix only the amount of products required to cover the repair area to limit waste, using the paint supplier mix‑management system.
  • Update all paint supplier color, technical data, and MSDS material as received.
  • Ensure proper formulation to meet color match and finish texture expectations, consulting paint supplier technical support.
  • Inspect refinish products for proper formulation and compliance with standards.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity, working within or close to most Standard Repair Times.
  • Communicate with Shop Manager and support staff to discuss findings and notes.
  • Perform minor adjustments and body repairs on trucks and trailers.
  • Apply, mix, and dispense automotive refinish materials to vehicle surfaces and sub‑assemblies.
  • Inspect panels and identify defects in repair, prepping, or masking; report issues to supervisor.
  • Work independently.
  • Clean and maintain paint formulation and spray application equipment; manage paint and storage areas.
  • Assist Shop Manager to assess customer needs and resolve issues.
  • Manage concurrent tasks, prioritizing work and time allocation.
  • Support Technician I in obtaining correct materials for each job.
  • Ensure adequate supply of refinished products to meet production requirements.
Education & Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED with 5 years of related experience; alternatively, a higher degree or certification with 3–7 years of experience.
  • Possess a set of hand tools required for the duties.
  • Acquire Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification T8 (PMI) within 18 months.
  • Must pass a DOT‑regulated background screening and DOT physical prior to employment.
  • Valid DOT medical card with >4 months remaining; otherwise a DOT physical is required.
  • Minimum age 21 due to interstate operating authority regulations.
  • Valid state driver’s license and MVR review; maintain Driver Qualification File.
  • ASE B2 (Painting and Refinishing), ASE B3 (Non‑Structural Analysis and Damage Repair), ASE B5 (Mechanical and Electrical) certifications.
Experience
  • Minimum 4 years as a Paint Technician on medium or heavy‑duty vehicle repair, or equivalent technical education/certifications/experience.
  • Associate’s degree, BA/BS, or technical certification plus up to 2 years of experience.
  • 5 years of equivalent experience in a similar technical capacity.
Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of various paint equipment and systems.
  • Clear, succinct communication skills for two‑way interactions.
  • Use logic and reasoning to evaluate alternatives and solutions.
  • Understand implications of new information for current and future problem solving.

Compensation

Hourly base pay: $28.37 – $42.60 per hour, varying by location and qualifications. Additional compensation may include commission and incentive programs.

Benefits

Minimum 6.67 hours of paid time off each month and seven paid holidays annually. Additional leave options include bereavement, jury duty, volunteer, military, and parental leave.
