Position: Shop Trailer Mechanic I

Shop Trailer Mechanic I – Cox Automotive Inc.

Fleet Services By Cox Automotive is a leading provider of on‑site mobile maintenance and repair services for light, medium, and heavy‑duty trucks and trailers. The Shop Trailer Mechanic I will work in a dedicated on‑site shop performing DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, light repairs, and other duties such as trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, liftgates, and brake chambers.

Responsibilities
  • Always follows and complies with safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Independently determines parts required for each job and interacts with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment and assists in cleanup at the end of each day for tools, parts, and equipment.
  • Applies knowledge acquired through formal training or on‑the‑job experience to perform the job and evaluates technical information related to the work.
  • Works with Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, and resolve or satisfy their expectations.
  • Manages concurrent assigned tasks, prioritizing work activities and time allocations.
  • Acts with integrity, demonstrates honesty and keeps commitments while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to ethical and professional standards.
  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
  • Performs routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
  • Uses hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
  • Documents all work by uploading pictures, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (RO) using company devices and the Karmak application.
  • Accurately completes DOT forms and other documentation in a timely fashion.
  • Maintains a high level of productivity, meeting or approaching standard repair times.
  • Communicates with the Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss RO findings.
  • Performs all work in compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other safety, health, and environmental policies.
  • Participates in all required safety training and completes all in‑company safety requirements.
  • Maintains assigned service trucks, conducts safety checks, and performs daily pre/post‑trip inspections.
  • Performs minor adjustments and repairs on various types of trailer equipment and systems including brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, liftgates, brake chambers, and steering systems.
  • Adheres to company policies, processes, and procedures.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma / GED and up to 2 years of related experience.
  • Possesses and supplies a set of hand tools necessary for job duties.
  • OEM training and certifications are preferred.
  • Participates in and completes all required company training.
  • Follows DOT regulations; must successfully complete a DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment.
  • Maintains a valid DOT medical card with more than four months remaining; otherwise a DOT physical is required.
  • Safe driver required with 3‑year MVR review; must hold a valid state driver’s license and maintain a Driver Qualification File.
Required Certifications
  • ASE T8 (PMI) certification (to be obtained within 18 months).
Preferred Certifications
  • ASE 608/609 certification.
Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including design, repair, and maintenance.
  • Ability to apply new information for current and future problem‐solving and decision‑making.
  • Physical ability to lift, bend, stand, and walk for long periods; can perform moderately heavy labor.
  • Capacity to exert physical effort continuously without fatigue, including repetitive tasks.
  • Judgment of distances between objects.
  • Effective communication of information in a succinct, organized manner to individuals and groups.
  • Determines appropriate tools and equipment needed for tasks.

Compensation

Hourly base pay range: $21.25 – $31.92 per hour. Compensation may vary based on location, experience, and skill level. Eligible for additional compensation such as commissions and incentive programs.
