Overview

Shop Trailer Technician II role at Fleet Services by Cox Automotive. This is a dedicated on-site shop position. We do not provide emergency roadside repairs. Veterans are encouraged to apply.

Job summary:

The Shop Trailer Technician II performs certified DOT inspections, preventive maintenance inspections, light repairs, and other duties such as trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, welding, fabrication, replacement of panels, body and framework. They may perform more advanced repairs under supervision and assist Senior Technicians while learning additional skills. A successful technician complies with company policies and achieves high performance metrics.

Responsibilities
  • Always follows and complies with safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Determine parts required for each job and coordinate with the Shop Parts Department.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in end-of-day cleanup of tools, parts, and equipment.
  • Apply formal training and on-the-job experience to perform duties; interpret technical information.
  • Work with the Service Writer to assess customer needs and communicate effectively.
  • Manage concurrent tasks with prioritization and time allocation.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) and DOT inspections; conduct follow-up repairs on light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles in a shop setting.
  • Perform routine maintenance (oil changes, battery checks, lubrication, etc.).
  • Use hand tools, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
  • Document work according to company standards; upload RO photos and notes using company devices or Karmak application; complete DOT forms timely.
  • Maintain productivity within standard repair times and obtain approvals on repair estimates or purchase orders when needed.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, health, environmental policies and regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT); complete required safety training.
  • Maintain assigned service trucks; conduct safety checks and pre/post-trip inspections.
  • Perform minor adjustments and repairs on trailer equipment and systems (e.g., brakes, air lines, liftgates, engines, steering, fabrication).
  • Diagnose, adjust, and repair trailer systems; inspect, test, and listen to equipment to diagnose malfunctions using appropriate instruments.
  • Assist Shop Trailer Technician I with diagnostics as needed.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED and 3 years’ related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; or 5 years’ related experience.
  • Own a set of hand tools necessary to perform duties.
  • OEM training and certifications are preferred.
  • Participate in company-required training.
  • DOT/FMCSA compliance: successful completion of a pre-employment DOT background screening and DOT physical; or valid DOT medical card with remaining validity in lieu of a physical (if applicable).
  • Must be at least 21 years old due to interstate commerce regulations; valid driver’s license and ability to obtain/maintain Driver Qualification File.
Certifications
  • Required within 18 months: ASE T8 (PMI) certification.
  • Preferred: ASE T4 (Brakes), T5 (Suspension), T6 (Electrical/Electronic Systems), T7 (HVAC), T8 (PMI), T608/609 as applicable.
Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of trailer parts and systems; ability to repair and maintain trailers.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and prioritization skills.
  • Physical ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy labor.
  • Effective communication and documentation skills; ability to convey information clearly.
  • Ability to identify tools and equipment needs; apply logical reasoning to problem-solving.
