Overview
Fleet Services By Cox Automotive is currently hiring a Sr. Shop Trailer Mechanic. This is a dedicated on-site shop position; not for emergency roadside repairs. The Sr Shop Trailer Technician performs certified DOT inspections, Preventative Maintenance inspections, light and advanced repairs, and related duties. This role often serves as the lead on jobsites and acts as a consultant for customers and technicians, adhering to all company policies and performance metrics.
Responsibilities- Follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
- Determine parts required for each job and interact with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in end-of-day cleanup of tools, parts, and equipment.
- Apply formal training and on-the-job experience to perform duties; work with and evaluate technical information.
- Collaborate with Service Writer to assess customer needs and resolve problems or satisfy expectations.
- Manage concurrent tasks with effective prioritization.
- Maintain integrity, confidentiality, and professional standards.
- Perform scheduled PMs, DOT inspections, and follow-up repairs on light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles in a shop environment.
- Change oil, check batteries, lubricate equipment; use hand tools, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts and jacks.
- Document work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders using company devices and/or Karmak application; upload pictures as required.
- Complete DOT forms and other documentation promptly.
- Maintain productivity and operate within standard repair times when possible.
- Communicate with Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals, retrieve PO numbers, and discuss RO findings.
- Adhere to safety, health, and environmental policies and applicable regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT); complete required safety training.
- Maintain assigned service trucks and conduct safety checks and daily pre/post trip inspections.
- Perform minor adjustments and repairs on trailer equipment and systems, including brakes, air lines, pumps, liftgates, brakes chambers, steering, welding, fabrication, and panel/body replacement.
- Diagnose, adjust, and repair trailer systems; assist and support Shop Trailer Technician I/II with diagnostics and parts acquisition.
- Perform advanced diagnostics and triage of complex repairs as needed.
- High School Diploma/GED and 5 years' related experience, or equivalent combination (e.g., degree/certification in related discipline with 3 years' experience; 7 years' related experience).
- Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required duties.
- OEM training and certifications preferred.
- Participate in required company training; DOT/FMCSA regulations apply; ability to pass DOT background screening and DOT physical prior to employment.
- DOT medical card acceptable in lieu of a DOT physical if valid for more than four months; otherwise a DOT physical required.
- Must be at least 21 years old due to interstate operating authority.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain/maintain Driver Qualification File.
- Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, repair, and maintenance; problem-solving and decision-making ability.
- Physical ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk; capability to perform moderately heavy labor.
- Endurance for long periods and repetitive tasks; accurate perception of distances and spatial relations.
- Effective communication and teamwork; ability to determine tools and equipment needed.
- Use logic and reasoning to evaluate alternatives and solve problems.
- Required within 18 months: ASE T8 (PMI); ASE 608/609; CDL-A License.
- Preferred: ASE T4 (Brakes); ASE T5 (Suspension); ASE T6 (Electrical/Electronic); ASE T7 (HVAC).
- Hourly base pay: $31.30 - $46.97/hour (range may vary by location and candidate qualifications).
