Clinical Support Tech II (Nights) - Critical Care Unit Hillsborough

Clinical Support Technician II needed for Critical Care Unit (CCU). The CCU is an 18‑bed unit that provides comprehensive medical and surgical care to the most medically fragile adults.

This position is located at the Hillsborough Campus. UNC Health Care Hillsborough Campus is a community hospital and an extension of UNC Medical Center focusing on elective surgical programs. The 163‑bed facility combines a community hospital culture with the innovative procedures and care for which the UNC Medical Center is known. The Hillsborough Hospital is located at 460 Waterstone Drive, Hillsborough, NC and offers free parking to employees.

Night shifts (7:00 pm – 7:30 pm) with weekend and holiday rotation. This position requires attendance at a week‑long orientation (Monday through Friday) which is offered every two weeks.

Summary

The Clinical Support Technician II is responsible for assisting the professional caregiver in the delivery of patient care, transporting patients and/or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, and performing a wide range of clerical, transcription, and maintenance functions. Performs patient care requiring clinical and procedural knowledge and skills using sterile techniques, infusion monitoring, and medical equipment. Coordinates the flow of communications on the patient care unit.

May or may not be assigned a defined patient care task based on unit needs. Tracks supply inventory, orders supplies, and assists the unit with clerical and administrative support including PI audits and data entry.

Responsibilities
  • Assist physicians and other healthcare providers with routine examinations and procedures, and procurement of equipment and supplies.
  • Critically review patient care documentation, noting significant changes in the patient's condition, and report immediately to a registered nurse or physician.
  • Perform a variety of clerical tasks including organizing and prioritizing workload, greeting and directing visitors, researching information requested by nurses and physicians, reviewing orders for logic and clarity, revising orders as requested by nurses, answering the telephone/patient call lights, transcribing physician orders, and maintaining medical records. Perform routine quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventory of supplies.
  • Provide administrative and clerical support including PI audits and data entry.
  • Provide clinical support assistance: cleaning the work area, maintaining office equipment, troubleshooting common software and hardware problems, changing linens, checking supply inventory, re‑stocking supplies, transporting patients/supplies/specimens, and assisting in orientation of new employees and students.
  • Provide direct personal care to patients as outlined in the plan of care: bathing, dressing, feeding, assisting with ambulation, measuring and recording vital signs, height and weight. May be responsible for specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage. Perform oxygen room set‑up and monitor oxygen flow‑rate, perform oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal suctioning, tracheostomy care, fecal impaction removal, sterile dressing change/wound irrigation, IV fluid assembly and monitoring, IV site care and discontinuation of peripheral IV, ostomy irrigation and care, urinary catheterization and irrigation, and perform established oral, nasogastric, gastrostomy tube feeding.
  • Reinforce routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions. Distribute patient education materials as requested by patients and/or healthcare providers.
