Overview
Independently plans and conducts a variety of recreational activities in support of a planned recreation program and/or assists higher level staff in implementing a planned recreational program; and performs other related duties as required. There are two (2) immediate vacancies with the Department of Parks and Recreation - Recreation Division:
- one (1) permanent (1/2 time) vacancy in Honokaʻa
- one (1) temporary vacancy not-to-exceed 10/24/2025 in Puna.
The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.
Responsibilities- Plans and conducts instruction for a variety of recreational activities in support of a planned recreation program.
- Develops plans in consultation with supervisors.
- Teaches, officiates, and/or instructs a variety of recreational specialties such as the performing arts, creative arts, or sports.
- Prepares fields and facilities for recreational activities.
- Prepares groups for competitive activities.
- Recruits participants and volunteers.
- Assists in planning county-wide specialty programs such as festivals and parades, etc.
- Acts as liaison with public to coordinate use and scheduling of facilities, grounds, and equipment.
- Attends training sessions, clinics, and workshops.
- Attends staff meetings.
- Prepares and submits reports.
- Maintains records.
- May supervise others.
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
- graduation from high school, and
- two (2) years of experience in organizing, conducting, and/or instructing recreational or group activities, and
- possession of a valid State of Hawai"i driver license (Class
3) or any other valid comparable driver license at time of filing, as applicable to the position. You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire, if the position requires a driver's license. (The immediate vacancies with the Department of Parks and Recreation requires a valid driver's license.)
Note: Possession of a current American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate is required prior to completion of probation.
Substitution of education for required experienceAn Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Education, Health, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Exercise, or a related field, may be substituted for lack of the required experience on a year for year basis (examples: 30 college credits equals one (1) year of experience, an Associates or higher can be substituted for all two (2) years of the required experience).
Scan and attach a copy of your official college transcript to be credited for the substitution of experience.
Volunteer experience will be considered provided that it includes organizing, conducting, and/or instructing recreation or group activities. Provide detailed information in Supplemental Question #7 including your total number of volunteer hours.
ExaminationAll applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.
