School Security Attendant I, II, III - Hilo High

Position Overview:

The School Security Attendant positions are available at Hilo High. Authorized level is III, but applications may be accepted for I and II if needed. The role involves ensuring safety and security on campus.

Salary Range
  • School Security Attendant I, SR-07: $2,784.88 per month
  • School Security Attendant II, SR-09: $2,899.72 per month
  • School Security Attendant III, SR-11: $3,137.22 per month
Example Duties
  • Performs campus supervision by patrolling the school ground during class, lunch period, and before/after school hours.
  • Observes and reports on unusual student behavior.
  • Discourses with students, encouraging them to seek assistance or counseling.
  • Ensures safe, orderly movement of pedestrians and vehicular traffic; may supervise the JPO program.
  • Enforces school rules, prohibiting smoking, gambling, fighting, vandalism, etc.
  • Inspects playgrounds, bathrooms, assembly areas, cafeteria and other facilities for safety hazards.
  • Directs unauthorized persons and drivers off the premises and reports concerns.
  • Assists during special student activities such as assemblies, pep rallies, athletic events, and dances.
  • Instructs loitering students to proceed to their destination.
  • Assists teaching staff with handling disturbances.
  • Informs administrators of critical situations that may require police, fire, or other assistance.
  • May activate alarm as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications Core Competencies

Applicants must possess the ability to read, write, and understand oral and written English, follow oral and written instructions, and perform simple arithmetic.

Experience Requirements
  • General

    Experience:

    Experience such as administrative, technical, clerical, or other work that involves following written procedures, rules, or regulations in contact with coworkers, supervisors, or members of the public to provide a service, respond to inquiries, obtain information, or provide discretion.
  • Specialized

    Experience:

    Experience working with a government, military, private or nonprofit organization, or a school system that involved protecting property and people against hazards such as fire, theft, damage, accident or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Must provide knowledge of basic protective systems.
Experience by Level
  • Level I – 6 months general experience; 6 months specialized experience.
  • Level II – 6 months general, 1 year specialized; 1.5 years total.
  • Level III – 6 months general, 2 years specialized; 2.5 years total.
Substitutions Allowed
  • A high‑school diploma may be substituted for six months of general experience.
  • One year or more in law enforcement, security, or an honorable discharge from military service may be substituted for six months of general experience and one year of specialized experience.
  • Completion of an associate degree or higher at an accredited college or university may be substituted for six months of general experience and one year of specialized experience.
Certification Required

All applicants must be registered as a Guard with the State of Hawaii Board of Private Detectives and Guards, in accordance with Act 208, Session Laws of Hawaii 2010. Registration card must be submitted with the application.

Additional Requirements

Applicants must meet all the date‑specific requirements for the position they are applying for, unless otherwise specified. Experience calculations are based on full‑time 40‑hour workweeks; part‑time experience is prorated.
