Sumter Local Government Consulting  | Full time

Hilton Head Island, United States | Posted on 07/04/2025

The Town of Hilton Head Island is seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable professional to serve as its next Plans Examiner. This is a vital role in ensuring the safety, compliance, and quality of development in one of South Carolina’s most iconic and environmentally conscious coastal communities.

Reporting to the Building Official, the Plans Examiner is responsible for conducting thorough reviews of commercial and residential construction plans to ensure compliance with building codes, floodplain regulations, and municipal ordinances. This position plays a key role in safeguarding the built environment and supporting the Town’s commitment to sustainable, resilient development.

The ideal candidate will be a skilled communicator and problem-solver who can interpret complex codes, collaborate with developers and design professionals, and contribute to public education on building standards and floodplain management.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Review construction plans for code compliance in structural, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems.
  • Conduct site visits and provide technical guidance to architects, engineers, and property owners.
  • Support floodplain management and Community Rating System (CRS) initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records and assist with public awareness efforts related to building codes.
  • Respond to inquiries and resolve issues with professionalism and efficiency.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
  • High school diploma or equivalent and five years of relevant experience (or equivalent combination).
  • ICC Certification in Residential and Commercial Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Electrical—or Certified Building Official.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, inspection techniques, and applicable codes.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities under time-sensitive deadlines.

This is a rewarding opportunity for a code professional who values public safety, community service, and the chance to contribute to the thoughtful development of a world-class destination.
