The Town of Hilton Head Island is seeking an experienced and visionary Assistant Planning Director to support and enhance the Planning Department’s commitment to community growth, development, and environmental stewardship. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the Town's strategic planning, zoning, and development goals in alignment with the community’s values and regulations.
About the RoleThis position plays a key leadership role in guiding day to day operations by providing oversight of Development Review, Building Inspection, and Community Development Services.
The Assistant Planning Director brings strong professional planning expertise and leadership to ensure consistent, high quality decision making, effective customer service, and sound implementation of the Town's Land Management Ordinance and development policies.
Key Responsibilities- Provide leadership and operational oversight for Development Review, Building Inspection, Permitting, and related administrative staff.
- Guide and mentor staff to support consistent application of planning principles, ordinances, and best practices.
- Review and provide direction on complex development applications, rezonings, variances, special use permits, and related land use requests.
- Ensure consistent interpretation and application of zoning regulations, development standards, and planning policies.
- Oversee administrative support for boards and commissions, ensuring accurate staff reports, meeting coordination, and follow up actions.
- Assist in preparing and presenting staff recommendations to boards, commissions, and Town Council.
- Coordinate cross departmental development review processes to support timely and efficient project delivery.
- Serve as acting Planning Director as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Planning or related field, plus eight (8) years of related experience in senior management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Extensive knowledge of planning, zoning, community development, and relevant regulations.
- Proven leadership ability with experience in staff supervision and project management.
