SY Bus Aide

Reports To:

Director of Transportation

180 Day Position

• Meet DOE physical exam and health requirements
• Complete all DOE, DOT and local school system requirements
• Ability to pass an initial drug test as well as future random drug/alcohol tests
• Minimum age of 21
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable

• Reports to work in a timely and professional manner.
• Interacts positively with staff, students, parents and the community.
• Rides bus to ensures physical and emotional safety of children.
• Keeps an appropriate record of problems arising on the bus.
• Familiarize self with daily route directions to be able to assist a substitute driver.
• Assists with loading and unloading, lifting as well as seating, safety belting and fastening of children.
• Keeps up with student's personal belongings and home/school parent correspondence.
• Familiarize self with wheelchairs, mobility chairs, wheelchair fasteners, two-way radio and other types of common special education equipment used to assist students.
• Ability to assist the driver in evacuating the bus if an emergency arises.
• Ability to understand the characteristics of special needs children and assist them as needed.
• Assist driver by sitting in an area in which the children are readily accessible. (Do not sit in the rear of the bus unless it is deemed necessary due to children in wheelchairs needing assistance.
• Assist driver by maintaining the cleanliness of the inside of the bus.
• Assist driver during loading and unloading of wheelchair students. (
  
  Note:
  
  The driver is to stay on the bus and assist with all wheelchair duties and the Aid is to depart the bus and operate the lift from the outside.)
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation and Superintendent.
