Job SummaryThe Nuclear Medicine technologist assists with providing safe, age‑appropriate care to patients by performing all exams provided by the department per procedural guidelines. The technologist has the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study. He/she is responsible for performing a wide variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in the utilization of the equipment for diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases.
The technologist can independently perform job functions and sets up equipment to provide imaging service and positions patients for procedures.
- Verify proper clinician order for procedure.
- Obtain complete clinical history, gather examination data, and assess for contraindicating conditions.
- Follow established procedures for administration of radiopharmaceuticals to avoid patient deterioration and undue pain.
- Ensure studies have correct patient identification and that right‑ and left‑hand markers are used appropriately.
- Review images for clinically acceptable results and release patients.
- Respond to emergency situations, restock crash cart, and maintain life‑support equipment.
- Assist other technologists in all modalities when needed.
- Observe patient condition and evaluate situations where physician intervention is necessary.
- Verify correct patient identity using two unique identifiers prior to procedure.
- Ensure patient’s privacy and comfort; maintain dignity throughout the exam.
- Demonstrate competence in applying appropriate procedures based on patient age.
- Organize schedule, time, and priorities to accomplish required activities within designated time frames.
- Follow physicians’ instructions when assisting with procedures and exams.
- Use critical thinking skills.
- Communicate with patients/families; ask clarifying questions and seek clarification on ambiguous orders.
- Understand, demonstrate, and document pre‑procedural verification and time‑out processes.
- Demonstrate pre‑ and post‑procedural care, prep patients, and use sterile technique.
- Maintain competency with venipuncture.
- Adjust technique to provide the best study possible and maintain image quality.
- Report equipment malfunctions to supervisor or service provider for timely correction.
- Clean, disinfect, and maintain equipment per infection control policy and departmental cleaning schedule.
- Explain the purpose and nature of the exam to patients before starting, minimizing anxiety and facilitating cooperation using AIDET.
- Address patient questions, concerns, or contraindications; notify physician when necessary.
- Participate in orientation and training of departmental employees.
- Ensure documentation is concise, legible, and uses precise terminology.
- Read scheduled emails and follow through with assignments.
- Complete mandatory departmental and hospital‑wide education without prompting.
- Consistently produce acceptable images, evidenced by radiologist feedback and quality audits.
- Verify equipment is fully operational before each use, checking for proper calibration.
- Send all studies to PACS immediately after completion; print CDs as needed.
- Print and scan studies transmitted after hours to teleradiography in PACS, if applicable.
- Complete all studies in RIS before final entry in PACS.
- Print completed log sheet from teleradiography and submit to radiologist.
- Restock linens and supplies; maintain the NM department in a clean, orderly condition.
