Job Summary

Fulltime Evening Weekend option—36 hrs/week.

Required:

One Year Sterile Processing Experience. The Sterile Processing Technician provides a key service to ensure equipment consistently meets the highest quality and safety standards. The individual in this role must be skilled in following protocols with a high level of attention to detail. Responsibilities include receiving and processing incoming supplies and equipment, performing cleaning and sterilizing duties, handling, properly processing and storing critical medical instruments, monitoring sterilizer equipment, inspecting and documenting, and preparing packs of supplies, linens, and instruments in Central Sterile Supply or Materials Management as directed.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Collect, receive, clean, disinfect, and decontaminate instruments, supplies and equipment according to hospital policies and procedures, AORN recommendations, AAMI guidelines, and TJC requirements.
  • Prioritize workload according to the needs of the operating room and hospital units.
  • Collect dirty instruments and equipment from departments throughout the hospital and from the operating room, scanning barcodes.
  • Disassemble and inspect instruments, selecting appropriate cleaning tools and detergents; manually decontaminate instruments and equipment; restock surgical implantables as appropriate.
  • Operate washer–decontaminator, cart washer, and ultrasonic cleaner to mechanically decontaminate instruments and equipment.
  • Inspect surgical instruments and medical equipment, detect need for repair or replacement, assemble, wrap, or containerize instruments and equipment.
  • Unload washer and scan barcodes on surgical trays.
  • Inspect instruments and equipment to ensure proper working order and cleanliness.
  • Scan barcodes to select appropriate count sheet for tray and ensure each instrument is accounted for.
  • Select appropriate chemical indicators for inside and outside packages based on mode of sterilization.
  • Select appropriate wrapping method or container.
  • Assess problems with trays, contact OR resource staff and supply coordinator as needed for resolution.
  • Avail self to operating room to locate trays and facilitate turnover of surgical trays.
  • Communicate with operating room staff and core techs to prioritize workload per the operating room schedule.
  • Sterilize instruments, equipment and supplies; handle and store them appropriately.
  • Appropriately select mode of sterilization for instruments and equipment; scan barcode on each tray.
  • Load and unload sterilizer and document accordingly.
  • Select biological indicator test pack if necessary for implantables on load.
  • Operate steam, gas plasma and peracetic acid sterilizers.
  • Handle, scan barcodes, and store sterilized items in predetermined locations for future use.
  • Monitor sterilizers and equipment mechanically, biologically and chemically per quality assurance standards and performance improvement standards.
  • Inspect sterilizer before use by checking power supply, emptying drains, cleaning, and adding register tape.
  • Notify biomedical department of malfunction, inform CS/SPD and OR manager.
  • Perform daily biological and diagnostic tests; document appropriately and legibly.
  • Activate recall procedure in event of positive biological indicator.
  • Select chemical indicators internally and externally per mode of sterilization and document results.
