Job SummaryThe Patient Access PRN Specialist I position works on an "as needed" basis, typically less than 16 hours per week. The role may be scheduled at PAS departments and locations not considered "home" facility to support business needs. The team member may be notified of release from the PRN roster if unavailable for three consecutive shifts. This job is the first point of contact and must ensure a pleasant experience for patients and visitors.
Responsibilities include interviewing patients and/or their representatives to obtain demographic, financial and insurance information, conducting intensive screening of Medicare, Medicaid and managed care patients, obtaining consents, coordinating collection of patient liabilities, verifying insurance benefits and coverage, responding to customer requests, and maintaining accurate records.
- Receive and process patient scheduling requests.
- Interview patients or representatives to obtain complete demographic, financial and insurance information.
- Enter patient information into the registration system and obtain necessary signatures.
- Read physicians’ orders and instruct patients accordingly.
- Escort patients to procedure areas and assigned rooms.
- Make corrections and updates to patient account information in the computer.
- Obtain new medical record numbers for newborn admissions and other new patients.
- Document thorough explanatory notes on patient accounts, including any non‑routine circumstances.
- Maintain a working knowledge of available information system capabilities and utilize required system applications.
- Understand and apply WHS philosophy and PAS policies and procedures related to assigned duties.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with WHS policy and HIPAA regulations.
- Organize work, establish priorities, and complete tasks productively without creating backlogs.
- Assist physicians and their office staff to expedite scheduling, pre‑admission, Medicaid screening and pre‑certifications on all accounts.
- Resolve errors in claims, denial (DNB) and patient work queues.
- Provide excellent customer service by greeting guests, answering phone calls, and maintaining courteous relationships with patients, physicians and the public.
- Present a well‑groomed and professional image in coordination with department/hospital dress codes.
- Document self‑pay balance estimates and manage financial arrangements to minimize risk for WHS.
- Contact scheduled patients at home to obtain pre‑admission information and financial policies.
- Coordinate financial counseling activities with relevant departments and verify insurance coverage.
- Complete mandatory training and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education
High school diploma required; associate's degree preferred.
Required Minimum ExperienceMinimum 2 years of related experience in a healthcare or institutional work setting. Epic experience preferred.
Minimum Skills- Computer/data entry experience.
- Effective communication skills (both written and verbal).
- Attention to detail, self‑directedness and a positive attitude.
- Working knowledge of patient registration systems and intermediate Microsoft Office Suite.
