Job Summary

The RN House Supervisor is a registered professional nurse who provides hospital‑wide leadership across all departments and divisions. This role utilizes advanced competencies in communication, job knowledge, professionalism, and business skills to promote a center of excellence for staff recruitment, retention, and clinical outcomes.

As a member of the leadership team, the RN House Supervisor oversees hospital activities in the absence of the president, administrators, and department directors, managing clinical, financial, human, and material resources. The position reports directly to nursing resources leadership and indirectly to the administrator on call (AOC), partnering with hospital leaders and medical staff to meet and exceed the hospital's mission, vision, and goals.

The RN House Supervisor provides leadership for department supervisors, assistant nurse managers, and charge nurses during transitions, serving as a mentor and standard bearer. The role upholds safety, regulatory, and quality standards, implements performance improvement methodology, Lean Six Sigma principles, and evidence‑based practice, and facilitates communication across all departments.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Promotes the hospital image and maintains a helpful attitude toward employees, physicians, visitors, and the community.
  • Presents self in a positive manner reflected by personal attire and etiquette.
  • Maintains confidentiality of hospital/departmental information.
  • Strives for operational excellence within Nursing Services to ensure quality nursing services.
  • Responds to day‑to‑day operational situations within the hospital in an appropriate manner and communicates with staff, visitors, and physicians as necessary.
  • Maintains effective and appropriate staffing, evidenced by ongoing budgetary analysis and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Conducts effective coaching consistent with Human Resources policies.
  • Maintains contact with managers to inform about coaching events.
  • Effectively supervises, coordinates, and directs hospital operational functions (e.g., Incident Command and initiating emergency procedures).
  • Promotes and monitors services and programs reviewed by the Chief Nursing Officer and Nursing Services.
  • Serves as a role model for all employees by adherence to and reflection in a positive attitude toward hospital policies and activities.
  • Assists the material management department with provision of patient care equipment.
  • Facilitates activities that contribute to patient throughput from emergency, admission to units through discharge (e.g., direct admissions, EMS).
  • Researches and secures necessary resources to support patient care and site safety.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively as part of communication and teamwork, ensuring information is shared for effective operations.
  • Seeks out, understands, listens, and conveys clear information as needed in written and verbal forms.
  • Provides accurate and timely information for shift report.
  • Demonstrates ability to implement problem‑solving mechanisms in routine and emergency situations.
  • Investigates and responds appropriately to all complaints, taking effective service recovery corrective action when necessary.
  • Demonstrates ability to identify and resolve interpersonal or professional conflicts.
  • Consistently demonstrates tact, courtesy, and a positive attitude in communications and interactions with employees, visitors, physicians, and the public.
  • Demonstrates willingness and ability to initiate and implement change, communicating problems to appropriate managers and department directors.
  • Leader of the On Site Command Center, establishing the command center or facilitating emergency response.
