We are seeking a strong RN Charge Nurse to lead the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU / Short-Stay Unit) on the night shift. This role is ideal for an experienced bedside RN ready to step into a hands-on leadership position while maintaining a modified patient assignment.
You will serve as the clinical and operational leader for the unit during your shift—supporting staff, coordinating patient flow, ensuring quality outcomes, and serving as a trusted resource for physicians and interdisciplinary partners.

The RN Clinical Charge Nurse oversees daily unit operations on the assigned shift while supporting safe, high-quality patient care. This role blends clinical expertise, leadership, and operational coordination, ensuring optimal patient outcomes and staff performance.
Charge Nurses are expected to model professional nursing practice, foster collaboration, and maintain accountability for patient care delivery, staffing, and unit flow.
🔹 Key ResponsibilitiesUnit Leadership & Operations
- Direct and coordinate unit activities during the assigned shift
- Assign patients considering acuity, staff experience, and skill mix
- Monitor patient flow, discharges, length of stay, and bed availability
- Round with physicians and collaborate with nursing leadership on staffing and census
- Serve as the clinical point of contact for operational and patient-care issues
Clinical Oversight & Patient Outcomes
- Perform daily patient rounds to evaluate quality, safety, and appropriateness of care
- Provide oversight or direct support for the nursing process using evidence-based practice
- Ensure relationship-based, patient-centered care through effective communication and handoffs
- Identify care gaps and implement corrective actions through coaching and peer accountability
Teamwork & Collaboration
- Promote interdisciplinary communication and collaboration
- Serve as a liaison between nursing staff, physicians, and leadership
- Support performance improvement initiatives, shared governance, and quality goals
- Foster a respectful, inclusive, and high-engagement work environment
Resource & Staffing Management
- Monitor and manage unit equipment, supplies, and staffing needs
- Assist in securing staffing during unexpected shortages or census surges
- Collaborate with nursing administration on bed flow and capacity planning
Professional Development
- Mentor and precept nursing staff and students
- Support ongoing competency, education, and professional growth
- Model accountability, professionalism, and ethical nursing practice
Required:
- Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
(All required upon hire unless otherwise stated)
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license (Single-State or Multi-State Compact)
- BLS – Basic Life Support
Preferred:
- ACLS (or Instructor / Provisional status)
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience (required)
- 2+ years of relief charge or demonstrated clinical leadership experience (preferred)
- Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills
- Proven ability to lead teams in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication, delegation, and conflict-resolution skills
- Passion for mentoring and developing nursing staff
- Commitment to quality, safety, and patient-centered care
