Emergency Services Assistant

Overview

Under the supervision of an RN and according to established practices and procedures, this role facilitates the provision of patient care in the emergency department (ED) by performing specific tasks and support functions as delegated by the staff RN.

• Assist with patient care under the direction of the staff RN, providing basic care to patients in line with hospital policies and procedures.
• Perform CPR when necessary and perform EKGs as requested.
• Assist with turning conscious or unconscious patients and manage patient ambulation to the bathroom.
• Serve and deliver patient food trays, snacks, and/or nourishment, checking that patients are allowed such items and feeding patients as needed.
• Assist with linen changes on occupied or unoccupied beds and with cleaning of incontinent patients.
• Correctly label collected specimens with time, date, initials of collecting staff, and source for laboratory transport.
• Transport patients to designated areas of the hospital as necessary or directed.
• Demonstrate effective time‑management skills and prioritize patient care activities appropriately.

• High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of high school level coursework or equivalent.
• Knowledge or experience equivalent to that acquired through unit secretary or medical assistant courses preferred.
• Fundamental knowledge of electronic medical record systems.
• Current BLS provider.
• Ability to provide care appropriate to the ages of patients served.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Completion of a hospital‑approved unit assistant course and acute healthcare experience preferred.
