Position: Technician - Engineer (Hobbs, NM)

Technician - Engineer (Hobbs, NM) at Kinder Morgan, Inc.

Monitors and evaluates rotating and reciprocating equipment (2 & 4 cycle internal combustion engines, compressors, fans, pumps, turbines and centrifugal compressors) using specialized electronic analysis equipment. Examines, analyzes, troubleshoots, and diagnoses equipment for operational defects. Assists Mechanical Project Support with troubleshooting and repairs, and works with Environmental Representatives to schedule and complete emissions testing. Monitors emission levels to keep engines and turbines compliant with permitted limits, maintains accurate records of all analysis and testing, and calibrates and maintains analytical equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct portable emissions analysis testing for compliance and assist in scheduling and conducting trailer tests as required. (Required by state regulations.)
  • Perform greenhouse‑gas and leak surveys using advanced detection and imaging equipment. (Required by EPA regulations.)
  • Operate engine and compressor analysis equipment, vibration equipment, emission analysis equipment, and borescopes to acquire equipment data.
  • Analyze data and develop specific recommendations and corrective actions.
  • Support analysis and maintenance of plant systems including gas compression equipment, control systems, auxiliary support systems, and ancillary equipment.
  • Provide condition‑based corrective action recommendations to resolve operational problems on gas compression equipment and collaborate with location personnel to resolve ancillary plant equipment issues.
  • Offer technical assistance in the operations and maintenance of plant equipment and provide training on equipment operations and maintenance policies and procedures.
  • Assist in equipment failure analysis and in the development of standard practices and procedures.
  • Support the identification and prioritization of capital and O&M improvement projects.
Education

Associate’s degree in a technical field, or equivalent experience.

Experience / Specific Knowledge

Thorough understanding of the mechanical operations of engine/compressor equipment and their auxiliary systems. Strong analytical, computer, verbal, and written skills. Experience utilizing specialized test equipment to provide corrective actions for engine and compressor performance issues.

Certifications / Licenses

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers.

  • Good computer skills (knowledge of MS Office, various operating systems, and other company software).
  • Good math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals).
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage crews at multiple locations and tasks daily.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead toward operational excellence.
  • Strong customer focus in dealing with engineering, field operations, and other internal and external groups.
  • Ability to effectively organize, plan, prioritize, document, and complete work with a minimum of supervision.

  • Works well with a team, follows direction from supervisors, prioritizes and adheres to established work schedules, focuses attention on details, and follows work rules.
  • Performs duties with little or no direct supervision.
Physical Demands
  • Must tolerate extreme conditions; work outdoors in all seasons.
  • Must frequently enter confined spaces and climb to and work from elevated platforms, ladders, and walkways.
  • Must lift a minimum of 30 pounds in awkward positions, and 50 pounds from floor to waist.
  • Must see, hear, walk, and speak clearly.
  • Must work safely around operating equipment while wearing required PPE.
Working Conditions
  • Required to carry a company‑provided cell phone and be available to respond during and outside working hours as needed.
  • Travel is required (approximately 40‑50%) and may include out‑of‑town nights and occasional weekend travel.
  • Successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and a background check after an offer has been extended and prior to employment.
