As a member of the Leadership Team, works in collaboration with the Nurse Department Director and Nurse Educator in accordance with Michigan Public Health Code Act 368 of 1978, Article 15 (Health Occupations), Part 172 (Nursing), and the ANA Standards for Nurse Administrators. Accountable for 24-hour management of: a) clinical nursing practice and patient care delivery; b) utilization of human, fiscal and other resources;
c) the development of personnel; d) compliance with regulatory and professional standards; e) implementation of strategic plans; f) oversight of and accountability for quality and improvement processes; and g) the fostering of interdisciplinary collaborative relationships within selected units of responsibility, and the health care institution as a whole. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and service appropriate to the age of the patients served on the 18-bed locked adult inpatient psychiatric unit.
** STANDARDS OF PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE:
** Holds staff accountable to promoting patient safety by maintaining the policies and procedures of the hospital and nursing department , including maintaining the Patient's Bill of Rights.
Practices in accordance with the ANA Standards of Professional Performance including:
QUALITY OF PRACTICE -- Systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.
EDUCATION -- Attains knowledge and competency that reflects current evidence-based nursing practice.
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EVALUATION -- Evaluates one's own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules and regulations.
COLLABORATION -- Collaborates with patient, family and others in the conduct of nursing practice.
ETHICS -- Integrates ethical provisions in all areas of practice.
EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE and RESEARCH -- Integrates evidence and research findings into practice.
RESOURCE UTILIZATION -- Utilizes appropriate resources to plan and provide nursing services that are safe, effective, and financially responsible.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH -- Practices in an environmentally safe and healthy addition, demonstrates COLLEGIALITY by interacting with and contributing to the professional development and training of peers, colleagues, and students.
** ADMINISTRATIVE – LEADERSHIP:
*** Provides leadership, direction, and guidance to staff through coaching and mentoring.
* Works in collaboration with the Nurse Educator orienting and maintaining the required training and skills of staff Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and staff practicing in a shared decision-making model of nursing practice Integrates staff into shared decision making through the Unit Practice Team
* Implements corrective action and conducts performance evaluations
* Provides timely, fair, and unbiased feedback to staff regarding performance
* Effectively addresses personnel issues in order to promote a productive and healthy work environment
* Develops, implements, and evaluates programs and activities that support a healthy, workplace of choice for staff
* Recruits and retains highly qualified staff to an environment that is safe, supportive, welcoming and supportive of diversity
* Supports staff through the process of change in the healthcare environment.
* Effectively facilitates teams and/or projects.
* Maintains positive working relationships with physicians and other members of the healthcare team.
* Responsible to adopt and consistently apply core values and strategic essentials as a means to guide and make decisions to achieve short and long-term organizational objectives.
** ADMINISTRATIVE – QUALITY:
*** Provides oversight of and accountability for quality improvement processes:
* Utilizes Evidenced Based Practice to develop and implement standards of practice ensuring delivery of quality care to patients and families.
* Investigates issues of concern as presented by Patient Relations, staff, patient and families; taking appropriate action
* Communicates effectively to inform staff and physicians of changes in policies and procedures or practice standards in the unit
* Collaborates with Department Director and staff to develop action plans in response to regulatory survey results
* Collaborates with staff and the Quality Department in the identification, development, and implementation of Unit Based Quality Improvement projects.
* Collaborates with staff and the Quality Department in developing, maintaining, and re-evaluating staff data collection systems and processes to support the practice of nursing and the delivery of patient care.
